Americans and canadians?

Unfortunately many canadians have threatened me and called me names and insulted me, but i have yet to fire back for i will not stoop to your level....i am repeatedly told how wonderful canada is ( i have been there and beg to differ)
yet one stat is puzzling me...If canada is great and wonderful and canadians love it there so much.....why does canada have such a high suicide rate? much higher than the American rate......now by no means am i trivializing suicide nor am i looking to get a rise out of anybody....to be honest suicide is not something anyone should laugh at and i hope this number declines in both countries....but why is it so high in canada?

Canada people are kinda snobby to americans.

Porbably because people are murdered in the US far before they have chance to commit suicide. Canada's suicide rate is less than 10% higher than the US from your figures, but the US murder rate is almost 400% higher.

Biff Nasty..

your profile picture looks remarkably like a local Vancouver punk rock drummer and notroiuos sh¡t disturber named Doug D___ that I know..

I think you're a bored Canadian!

HOw can you say our suicide rate is "much higher than the American rate"? If you read the stats ONLY 1 person per 100000 more Canadians commit suicide than Americans (those numbers are NOT in percentages people...that means only 0.000001% higher). Um I'm not like a statistician or anything but that really doesn't look like a much higher number to me.....

Oh, and as stated by others, you're murder rates ARE much higher then ours...so we may have one more suicidal person but you've got many more psychotics who have no respect for other peoples lives. I think when it comes to overall impression of a country people frown upon murder much more so then suicide.

Sorry, but if your really that concerned about finding an argument that proves the USA is better then Canada, you're going to have to do a lot more homework because you have yet to give us any concrete information that isn't just a manipulation of your opinion.

Better luck next time...you'll need it.

And I would just like to make a note...as I probably won't respond to any more of your rants....

When travelling, tourists from Canada often wear a maple leaf on their luggage so that they are not confused with Americans. Why? Because we get treated better (in general) if we identify as a Canadian. Just food for thought as you continue to try and prove your country is better.

Cherry_Blossom
Yes we may have a 1% higher rate of suicide many to do with our Native Indians and suicide...but we don't have near numbers of the co-workers killing each other, school shootings and rampage killers. That is a stat I am sure you and your fellow citizens can be proud of. Suicide is an individual choice...unlike walking into work and having someone decide to take you out because they have been laid off because it is cheaper to have the job done by an illegal immigrant.

Why is your life expectancy lower
Why is your murder rate higher
Why is your infant mortality rate higher-even Cuba does better
Why is your HIV/AIDS rates higher

You may be your biggist problem with Canadians. I have lived on the border of Canada for most of my life and have found these people to be no different than any of us. I'm willing to bet you are a Bush supporter aren't you?

You actually cited Wikipedia???

You might want to look through your MLA format and double check their definition of "credible sources"

The suicide rate is likely because of the high rate of suicides on reserves. An average of 2 people die every week on every reserve in Canada from suicide.

And I have a questions.

If America is so great, why is everyone so fat? How come there are more murders in America each year then anywhere else in the world? How come you guys re-elected Bush?

Because we're waiting for you to pack-up and leave. But having to wait this long makes us really depressed.

I'm hoping once you're finished decimating Iraq, ya'all will move there. And then when ya'all move there, we can finally have the remaining 1/3 of this continent to ourselves.

Either way... I'm sticking it out. I'm not ready to commit suicide just yet.

;-)

Smile people. I am just kidding, of course.

Sorry to hear that you've had some bad experiences with Canadians and Canada. Please don't judge us all by a few bad experiences.
We often get frustrated with Americans because they know so little about Canada, whereas we know a lot about the US. Think of us as the little sister trying to stick up for herself against a big huge muscular brother who doesn't give us the time of day.... We just want to be acknowledged and shown some respect... Like any little sibling.
Regarding our high suicide rate. Yes. It's a problem especially in the far north (native reserves.) Most suicides are a result of SAD. Seasonal Affected Disorder i.e. winter depression. (Especially in the far north) the winters are long and cold and the daylight hours are short (non existent in the arctic.) Even in the south of Canada it gets depressing going to work in the dark and returning home from work in the dark. Midwinter, we only see daylight through our office windows or on weekends. SAD/suicide is a big problem for most northern countries.
Fortunately most Canadians embrace winter by playing winter sports (skiing, skating, snowshoeing, tobogganing, hockey, ice fishing, snowmobiling etc.) And once the days are longer and the snow melts, its amazing to see how much happier people are! We have great summers up here.
I agree that suicide is not something to laugh about. We have been trying to deal with the problem, especially in the northern native reserves.
NB- The Canadian suicide rate is only 1.2% more than in the US! That's negligable.

I'm a Canadian. I'm almost insulted. Almost. Except that if the whole world went around spewing hate at each other like you we would have even more wars then we already do. Kindness goes a long way. And where in Canada have you been? Judging us on a few places and few people. I think you either need a therapist or you need to switch whatever you are doing because it's obviously making you a very bitter and angry person. But please don't lash out at my country and I because of it. Try and ask more helpful questions instead of hurtful. Try smiling at one of those "awful canadians" and see where that gets you. Half the people you see here aren't even born here or from here. They are visiting because they've heard it's so nice. and it is. so...mum's do know best. "If you don't have anything nice to say....don't say anything at all."

first of all Canada and Canadians is spelled with a capital C

secondly, i've looked at your profile. you are very anti Canadian. how are we supposed to take your biggoted (and UNINFORMED) q&a?

when YOU run around spewing hate, it ofcourse brings more hate.

YOU are the reason that you are being insulted.

it is because of Americans like YOU that so many of us have no need for you.

as far as the suicide rate, it's probably because so many Canadians are becoming Americanized. if i started acting like a self rightous idiot who only cares about himself, i'd rather be dead too.

give your head a shake. YOU NEED IT.

Danelady
Biff, I haven't threatened you, or called you names, or insulted you. I'm not an American.

JuanB
You've asked this question before. You always did have trouble coming up with new material.

Canadians have 1 more suicide than the US because Americans are more successful at it. Not because Americans are that much better at these things. They just have better equipment. Most Americans pointing a gun to their head and pulling the trigger achieve their objective. While some Canadians struggle with swallowing 50 sleeping pills and not being discovered or throwing them up, etc. Or calculating the logistics of a noose.

So there you have it. In the US someone commits suicide and dies. In Canada the statistics are slightly higher because we keep more people around with suicidal tendencies (I miss that band) for 2 or 3 or 4 attempts.

victorsaremi
could be due to the cold weather, seeing as how their seasons are different. Seasonal depression could come in to effect during longer nights and colder weather. Im not sure the exact cause of seasonal depression it has to do with sunlight and u/v rays, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night.

Suicide rate are indeed amongst the native population.
It might be because as someone else pointed out that they live on reserve. They have a choice but usually prefer to live there with their people as opposed to by themselves in the big cities.
In the North (Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories) the fact that the sun is practically absent 6 months could also have an effect.
Alcohol and drug abuse unfortunately leads to a high rate of suicide.
