An advantage to living in the US compared to Canada? |
This has been posted several times and we Cdns have come down on Amercians saying there is NO advantage in moving to the US.
However I came up with an advantage to being American, (not moving to the US) and that is that if I had been American I could have sued the hell out of Century 21 when the roof of a building they owned fell in on me. Instead of legal justice I am left permanently disabled, broke, unable to work fulltime and pretty much homeless.
In Canada because of WCB we cant sue when accidents like this happen at work. We have to let the WCB legal dept "handle it" and because they are on the side of employers that means they wont do a thing.
And we all know what WCB coverage is worth - worse than nothing because it takes away the legal rights of employees and leaves them with nothing.
Americans have access to the legal system that Cdns dont have, because it too expensive for most Cdns to ever take anyone to court, no matter what they do. Additional Details You're right I dont know what lawyers charge in the US but in Canada if you cant slap down a retainer of between $35,000.00 and $60,000.00 they wont even talk to you. And thats just the retainer not the acutal bill and court costs etc. Lawyers charge about $180 and $480 |

I wish that Americans weren't so sue-happy. Thanks for digging up something nice about the US. |

Sorry for your troubles. At least someone is doing something on your behalf (I'm assuming things aren't settled yet).
I'd rather live in Canada and take the chance of having a serious injury while working then live in a country where you can get sued for $50,000,000 because you ruined somebody's pants at your dry cleaner. |

Almost a good point but remember if you get run over in the states the driver can sue you for mental anguish.
and if century 21 was there they'd sue you too. |

In Canada, if you are the injured or the victim of neglegence, you can launch a civil suit against the property owner.
Consult a lawyer.
There is a legal term called dangerous premisis that relates to your situation. |

And dirt cheap is what I need-- any info about that? |

Good to know about that. But I hate the very very double double US airport security check. It is more than other world security check. It seems exagerated. It distruct nerves. |

In most US states if you get hurt on the job you would also be prohibited from suing and stuck with Workman's Comp. |

Well, I have only lived in the US. I was planning to go to Canada for a PhD, but I found out that because of my HIV status they would deport me. So, Canada is for me not an option any more. While in the US, I received a lot of help (despite of not being an American) when I was diagnosed as HIV positive, which I widely thank. |

You know there's good & bad to both countries. I'm American & my wife is current wife is Canadian. We have lived in each others country and to her Canada is it, to me the US is it. We both agree that the US has a more pronouced military force than Canada but the US has a larger population. Some of the worker rights laws here in Canada are better you know things like that. Where I'm from that attorney fees are different from $100 - $175 an hour. I have found tho that in Canadian schools there isn't much infasis on competative sports as there are in the states. Don't get me wrong, I love it here. |
