Anti-Quebec sentiment in Saskatchewan? |
I currently live in Quebec, and I was talking with my parents yesterday about my plans of maybe moving to Saskatchewan in 2-3 years. They tried to discourage me by saying that the people there are not friendly, especially towards people from Quebec, even if I speak English well. Is this true? Is SK more tolerant towards Quebecers than Alberta or BC? And do you think the current political climate could worsen things? What are the chances I'd hear pejorative epithets such as "frog" on a regular basis?
Thank you in advance... |

Speaking as a "Fransaskois" (Saskatchewanian of old French ancestry), my advice is this: Westerners LOVE Quebec federalists, but are, understandably, not so keen on sovereignists -- particularly proud, rude, arrogant ones.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba, given their political history, are much more mellow and accepting than are Albertans.
There is a substantial francophone community here in Regina with radio, TV, a cultural centre, schools, etc. Should be no problem at all if you're not a jerk.
Learn to love Saskatchewan Roughrider football and you'll be fine. |

I can honestly say from bieng in the West and the East.
The West has a bad rep that is undeserved. Westerners are not generally biased or stereotypical nearly to the amount Easterners are.
I'm saying that in complete honesty. They get labeled as red-necks unfairly... the friendliest peopel you'll meet this side of the Maritimes are in Saskatchewan. |

I'm an English Quebecer & few years back I drove through Saskatchewan & twice, when people saw my plates they wanted me to speak to French to their kids. They were VERY proud that their kids were becoming bilinqual. There are ignoramuses everywhere but I'd be surprised if you met many in Saskatchewan. |

The people of Saskatchewan are VERY friendly, not unlike those of us out in Alberta and BC. It's true, we have a bad rap out here and are labelled very unfairly.
I have some very dear friends from Quebec and they always say they are surprised at how friendly the West is. They were warned that we were all a bunch of ignorant rednecks, which couldn't be farther from the truth.
Anywhere in the West you are going to hear different political opinions but as far as name calling such as "frog", I can't imagine that being a problem for you.
Just be friendly, kind and considerate and you'll do just fine. |

It's mostly the politicians from Quebec that Westerners don't like. |

Your Football or Hockey Politics are way more important than your Language Politics. Even in Alberta there are several very Francophone communities especially in NE like St Paul, Vermillion etc. As so properly said, our isuues with Quebec are with the politicians, not the people. |

People here are for the most part, tolerant. We are also friendly. I had many friends from Quebec when I was going to the U of R.
If they heard that people here don't like Quebecers, it may have stemmed from an incident at a Rider game a few years ago when some drunks said some nasty things to a few Alouette fans (they were probably drunk, and DO NOT represent Saskatchewan or Rider fans in general). |
