Canadians are generally very friendly- give us a Tim Horton's doughnut and a comment about the latest hockey game, and you're friends for life (or at least a day)!
Racism occurs everywhere you go, but in my experience, there's no particular hatred of Asia up here.
I am from Beijing and live in Ontario, and have never experienced outright racial discrimination. And never forget your Asian pride- being white doesn't make you better than any other human being. Don't buy into the lie that the whiter you are, the more "normal" you are!
Canada is a great place, despite all our stereotypes. I hope you love it! |

While racism does exist in Canada, as it does almost everywhere in the world, I think Canada happens to be a place that does a very good job dealing with racism. It's one of the places I've been with the LEAST amount of racism. There are still acts of hatred - I've heard terrible remarks made towards Islamic women and swastikas spray painted on Jewish homes. But I have to say that racism isn't socially accepted here - people really do discourage it. Generally citizens are very offended when people among them target specific citizens because of their race, religion or culture
I've noticed there is slightly more issues with race in Central Canada (where I live now) than when I grew up in BC. BC has massive populations of Asian people. Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Fillipino. All have sizable communities in Vancouver. |

Hi,
I live in one of the suburbs of Vancouver, BC. This area has a large Asian population and at times, I feel that I'm the minority (no kidding, I was in a Tim Horton's earlier tonight and after awhile realized that out of 16 people present, I was the only Caucasian). The community to the South of Vancouver is Richmond and at the last official census, the Asian population is the majority. I live in Surrey and there is a large population of people from India. Canada is known as being a diverse multicultural society. There certainly is not any racism in general here. Having said that, you will always have someone somewhere with a racist attitude. In Canada, it's not tolerated in government or business. |

No lots of people here are Asian, I get a couple Korean kids in my class each year. It'll be fine. |

It depends on where you are. They might be a little in rural areas where they don't see asian people a lot. But in major cities like Toronto or Vancouver then no. Because there are huge populations of asian people. Canada is a very liberal country and friendly towards everyone don't worry. Also there's a asian girl on the back of the $5 Canadian money so I don't think they're racist. =P |

Hi,
I am middle easteren living in Canada,I find Canadians friendly and nice.I am pretty sure that you ll like it here. You coming here in a great time, the weather is lovely here now:)
There are lots of Immigrants here in Canada(thousands of asians) and they are all living in harmony with each other.
Toronto,Montreal and Vancouver are 3 of the most immigrant friendly cities in the world.
don't forget that; You can not generalize people.you will find rasict people in any nationality. |

You're going to blend right in if you're in any large city. There have been Chinese, Japanese, and East Indian people in Canada for 100 years, and there are some in almost every town in Canada, though many more have arrived in the last 30 or 40 years and they tend to go to the big cities. There are parts of Vancouver where Asians of all kinds are in the majority. There lots of Italians in Toronto, too, so we're pretty much used to seeing people of all races and backgrounds. Don't worry about it. There's racism everywhere at some time or another, but I'd guess it's less of a problem in Canada than just about any other country in the world. |
