Are most hotels strictly non-smoking in Vancouver?

A couple of friends and I will be traveling to Vancouver and we've found that a lot of the hotels are mostly non smoking. And the ones that do allow smoking are quite expensive. Are there any hotels that allow smoking and are inexpensive?

Also, we would like to have ideas on what there is to do in Vancouver. We were thinking of skiing but none of us know how and where to do that.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Also, I would like to know how much spending money would be appropriate to bring for skiing, shopping, dining, etc...

I travel to Vancouver a lot as well as other places to compare it too. I am a non smoker. I was wondering about regulations. Downtown Vancouver is relatively expensive place to stay anyway. I would say that smoking rooms are becoming fewer and fewer. Non smoking tends to not apply to single rooms anymore, they are non smoking floors or the whole hotel. You will find that if a hotel renovates, those rooms become non-smoking. They tend to have heavy penalties for smoking in a non-smoking room too, as you can tell when a room has been smoked in, and it takes a lot to get the smell out of it. Anyway, with the renovation thing, and smoking rooms tending to be more run down, I would expect a smoking room to be cheaper. If you find one. But it could be the demand by smokers for fewer and fewer rooms. If they aren't cheaper you will be paying more for a lesser room.

Whistler is where you would go skiing. But it is a 2 hour drive, and you need to plan for a winter drive. Buses, etc. will be slightly longer. With a 5 hour there and back, you would want to plan that ahead of time and book a night or two in Whistler. But that is more expensive than downtown hotels. If you don't, Grouse Mountain is the closer option. If going that way, you can check out the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Granville Island Market is a fun place to do some shopping, but it is mostly fresh food (Seafood, etc.) Robson Street offers touristy and trendy shopping. Expensive, but a good place to look and find a place to eat. Stanley Park is a good place for a drive or stroll, or visit the Aquarium.

I think you have most of your answers. The only last tip i have is that you can save a lot by using the last minute offers found on this directory :

A smoking pan in all public places came into effect a few years ago. I'm not quite sure how that works with hotels. Perhaps you could find a few hotels that interest you and then phone or email them to find out if they offer smoking rooms (if it is not mentioned on their website).

I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Toronto a few weeks ago, and over heard front desk asking someone if they wanted a smoking room. Not sure what you consider expensive, but I just looked up the Holiday Inn (there are several locations in Van) and they offer smoking rooms for $99.00

cypress (my sister works there) or grouse mountain are easiest to get to. i think theres a bus to grouse that u can catch infront of one of the snowboard shops on 4th ave. just find 4th avenue, and ask someone where all those shops r and you will get pointed in the right direction.

Places to ski around Vancouver are: Gross Mountain, Cypress Mountain, Mount Seymour

There's skiing in Whistler/Blackcomb which is about 2hours north of Vancouver.

Not sure if you're coming for the Christmas holidays, but there are a few things to do.

Bright lights in Stanley park. It's great, it's all lit up and if you have kids there's a train ride you can take at night. To enter the park, it's by donation for the Firefighters to raise money for burn victims.

Van Dusen Botanical Garden Festival of Lights. It's a beautiful garden in the middle of the city and at Christmas time they have it all light up. It's quite spectacular.

Carol Ships Parade of lights. They have all of these boats decorated with Christmas lights. Very beautiful and romantic.

There's lots to do. Enjoy your visit.
