Are the Olympics unfair to Canada?

Sadly, Canada has still not won a medal. Vietnam has a medal. So does Azerbaijan, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Isn't it unfair that the Olympics has "sports" like shooting, when 99.99 percent of Canadians have never seen a pistol before and have zero chance of getting a medal in that competition? Wouldn't it be more fair to Canadians for the Olympics to have medals for painting? Perhaps they should cancel boxing and give medals for poetry. Maybe they could have an event that rewards the most diverse and tolerant nations? Perhaps they should give out medals to the countries with the best health care system. Having Canada compete in these unfair macho games is a disgrace. At the very least they should be given a medal for showing up. Everyone should be a winner at the Olympics, right?

We always have a chance at Badminton. And I'm looking forward to seeing Despatie dive.

But, really, is it fair that we even have the winter olympics when many equitorial countries don't even get snow? I mean, how many subsaharan african countries even bother to send anyone to the Olympics. I mean, really,

The olympics aren't over yet. There are still many medals that haven't been awarded yet.

And while a gold is the ultimate dream, it's the truth that the farthest many athletes will get is the games themselves. And being invited to the Olympics is an honour in itself. It's an honour in itself to represent the country, even if they don't place first, second, third. I think we should be proud of our olympians regardless of how they place.

they could have a metal for whining. you'd take it hands down.

Good grief you people. can't you undestand sarcasm when you read it?

So Canada doesn't do so well in the Summer Olympics, big deal. This question could easily be turned around on tropical climate countries who do not do so well at the Winter Games. As a Canadian, I do not feel this is unfair in the least. We cannot be the best at everything. Where is the sport in that? The only sport I am interested in in the summer Games is Basketball anyways. The Winter Games however, have my full attention.

*Besides, if you truly are Canadian, then you must have noticed we do not put stock on always having to be the best, nor do we whine when we don't win. Canadians aren't like that. We go and compete for the spirit of competition and representing our country, not just for bragging rights. We are proud of athletes no matter how they do, not just when they win.

Canada's a winter nation.. we do best in the Winter Olympics. Its really that simple.

Are you joking? POETRY? And to all the arrogant Americans on here just because 1 Canadian is a *** doesn't mean everyone here is. I'm sure you guys have your fair share too.

And it is normal that the States and China have the highest amount of medals so far because they have a billion and one times our population. Anyway the olympics are only 3 days in. I'm pretty sure we'll get a medal in rowing.

Plus it is true that we do better in the Winter Olympics; coming here to Vancouver in 2010!!!

As for your shooting enquiry: I have a cousin that does trap shooting. Its not illegal, just not a very popular sport.

Buddy the Olympics are about sports!!! And Canada is more of a winter country we do better in the winter olympics. Calm down and just enjow the olympics. There not over yet... Canada still has a lot of time to win a medal!

Be patient. The games have only just begun. Usually, Canada catches up during the middle of the games.

Brandon S your an idiot. Compare the population of Canada and USA, 30 million to 300 million what do you expect. Still it's funny how a few years back a Canadian was the MVP in the NBA, NHL, AND MLB. As for hockey I'm sure the first person was talking about field hockey.

And I know it is quite disappointing to have not won a medal yet but the Olympics have only just started, we have plenty of time to win a medal. We are sure to do better at the Winter Olympics in 2010.

there's is no excuse.

norway, sweden etc. (winter countries with small population) has medals.

Canada simply pathetic.

depressing, ain't it?

What's your excuse?

According to a Recent popular US article on the L.A. Times.

A little question of history. Mordecai Richler (a Canadian satirical novelist and satirical children's novelist) once suggested that what defines Canadians is the fact that we're all, quite literally, losers--and we've never gotten over the fact. Nobody actually actively chose to live here because they really liked the idea. The natives, who were always here, didn't choose to have the European-dominated country of Canada imposed on top of them--but they lost battles, and so became Canadians. Losers. The French in Quebec are Canadians because the British defeated them back in the eighteenth century (and they sure don't like that fact these days). Losers, right? The British-based population of Canada consists of two major groups: United Empire Loyalists, the people in the American colonies who sided with Britain in the war of independence and lost, and so had to flee to Ontario and the Maritimes; and immigrants from England, most obviously people who were doing poorly there, losers at the game of life who decided to set out and try again somewhere else. Losers all again. Throughout this century, people who have immigrated to Canada have tended to be people who have lost elsewhere--lost wars, lost land, etc. Losers yet again. My own ancestors came here because of pogroms in Eastern Europe that destroyed their homes--and would have preferred to go to the US but they couldn't get in, so they settled for Canada, poor losers. We Canadians aren't patriotic because we really only settle for being here, all of us, rather than being delighted by it--and we love to whine about it. Losers for sure, eh?

Nobody is forcing Canada to the Olympic games. Funny, I always thought the idea of the Olympics was to compete, not to win. I never knew Canadians didn't understand that and are so hung up on winning.

You certainly don't represent a "diverse and tolerant" nation with your attitude.
