Yes there are slums, chiefly found in the larger cities like Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. One of the poorer smaller cities that have this problem is Winnipeg, Manitoba. They have a high crime rate, high poverty rate, and high suicide rate.
However, you are less likely to be a victim of a violent crime in Canada than most other countries, including USA. But keep in mind the population of Canada is much lower than USA...Less people crammed into one area means less conflict and less potential for crimes to occur.
Here are some known issues around the country:
Vancouver - significant drug, prostitution, and gang-related activity, especially on the east side of town.
Toronto - Gang activity that has led to drive-by shootings, including one on DEC-26 (Boxing day) of a young girl who was just out shopping for the day and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Montreal - One of the major spots for car thefts. In recent times, several home invasions have occurred, where thieves break in, beat or tie up the owners, then steal all the valuables and cash.
In Montreal over the years, there have also been a few school shootings, similar to in USA. Marc Lepine shot several women at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. And the most recent was Kimveer Gill, who in 2006 went on a shooting rampage in Dawson College, killing one female student (Anastasia De Sousa) and injuring several others. Thankfully, these incidents are few and far between. |

The crime rate per person/capita is actually higher in Canada then the USA. Yet, it is still safer. We have less gangs and less gun problems. The crime here is mostly theft, fraud and organized crime. You are less likely to find a bunch of slums full of young gang bangers beating and killing people for whatever dumb reasons. Although we do have those areas, in comparison with America, it is nothing. I live in probably one of the worst neighbourhoods in all of Canada. Although it is tough, when I visited Detroit, it makes my neighbourhood look like Disney Land.
More Brief
Yes, we have slums, although not many.
The crime rate is surprisingly higher then the USA per capita/person. |

Hey Hipolito M - The crime rate has dropped by 3% in 2007, mainly due to declines in break-ins, thefts under $5,000 and counterfeiting. The national crime rate has decreased by about 30% since peaking in 1991. You can find out more at the link below. |

Yes and no. I mean the entire population of Canada is about the same as Los Angeles county. So it's very different. But yes we have low cost housing slums too. But the amount of people wouldn't be nearly the same. |

I'm glad to see that people are pointing out the truth about Canada for once. Perhaps if more of the Immigrants knew what it was really like, they wouldn't be flooding into the country like they are. Yes, there are slums and people living below the poverty line in just about every town. |
