I personally think so. I'm a bigger fan of Vancouver Island and visiting the tiny cities around the coast... namely Tofino.
Vancouver and Victoria are nice, but they are big cities nonetheless.
The forests there are beautiful. |

absoloutely. I live in Vancouver. Also, Alberta Calgary is also a good place to visit.
When you go to vancouver make sure you visit Christ Church Cathedral, University of British Columbia (im going to study there) and also the Vancouver art gallery.
If you're going to victoria, visit the Royal British Columbia Museum and the IMAX National Geographic Theatre.
Canada is reallly beautiful |

Victoria is a nice place to visit, nice buildings and a nice view over the sea. I don't find Vancouver very beautiful, it's all the same to me. |

Nature perfect. And in an urban environment. There are a lot of other good points about them too. But:
If you are from Sydney (Australia), or from around the Alps in Europe, it may not be a new experience for you.
So it depends where you are coming from, and what you are looking for. |

Great places to visit, just bear in mind that they are both urban centres, with all that that entails. The previous post speaks of crime ridden areas, trigger happy transit police and traffic gridlock - its not as bad as that. For instance, the transit police have not caused a death, either by taser use or by firearm use - there was a recent high profile death at the airport following RCMP use of a taser. Main and Hastings is in the centre of the poorest neighbourhood in Canada, but it is adjacent to Vancouver's Chinatown, the 2nd largest Chinatown in North America, and several interesting historic sites. The traffic issue is not nearly as bad as Los Angeles, London, or New York, even with the construction. And the weather is the weather, no matter what you do. It certainly isn't extreme, and if the person posting that response can predict the weather for the balance of the spring and summer, Environment Canada has a job waiting for you! |

Vancouver is a very large, multi-cultural city with many fine people of Chinese and East Indian decent that greatly add to the diversity of the community. Greater Vancouver has a population of over one million people and is in a beautiful setting being that it is right on the ocean and the North Shore mountains come right down to the harbour.
Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia is on the southern tip of Vancouver Island and is considerably smaller than Vancouver but is truly a beautiful city with it's old English charm and the multitude of parks and gardens.
Many people tour both cities and enjoy themselves very much. |

I think the cities are really pretty, but you sort of run out of things to do quickly, unless you're really into outdoor sports. I dont find there are things you can do here that you cant do anywhere else, but they're are both really beautifull places. |

Excellent to visit, but maybe not this year.
Construction around the city is rampant with at least two major thru-ways affected & it's not expected to let up soon, at least until 2010.
Usually Van. has great summer weather, but this year? Like most everywhere else in the world we've been affected by the strange weather system of '08; right now (and for the past few weeks if not months) it's about 10 degrees below normal. As of today a person can still see their breath outside during the afternoon, when usually we'd be strolling around in as little clothing as possible and still perspiring.
If you do visit, avoid the downtown eastside (Hastings and Main St. area): since Vancouver was incorporated it's been the 'slum' part of the city, even if it has the most interesting aspects of the city. Tourists are for the most part only bothered for spare change, but it will still make you paranoid to walk around. However, the city planners are trying to sweep the undesirables away in time for the 2010 Olympics, so if you wait a couple of years everything should be just fine, although traffic will be amazingly bad.
Also be warned if you take the Vancouver transit system's Skytrain; absolutely make sure you have purchased a ticket. The transit police have recently been issued taser-guns and unfortunately have used them, causing one person's death. According to the law, they're allowed to use them on a person who doesn't have a proper fare-ticket and tries to talk their way out of it, which is considered "threatening behaviour".
As for night-life - last-call is around 12 AM in most pubs/bars, and night-time buses stop around 1 AM, with specific routes still running until about 2:30-3 AM.
On the whole, if you catch a break in the weather and head to the 'touristy' areas with careful in-city directions planned out ahead of time, it should be an enjoyable experience. |
