Are you required to have a passport when traveling to Alaska by auto or RV?

I know that just in the past year a passport has been required when returning from Mexico and Canada. When we traveled to Alaska by RV 10 years ago a passport was not required either way.

George Bush decided you need a passport when crossing the border in either direction, so yes.

Even if Alaska is part of the U.S.A., you will still need to drive through Canada to get to Alaska. So, unless you are flying to Alaska directly from the lower 48 and Hawaii, you will need to have a passport.

Why would you need a passport to enter the U.S.? Isn't Alaska part of the U.S.?

Alaska is part of the United States so I don't believe it would require a passport. If you plan to go into Canada while you are there and fly to any other countries, then you would need one. Enjoy your trip!

Unless I'm confused and you aren't in the US and traveling from Canada into Alaska....then I wouldn't know the answer! oops!

Until June 2009, US citizens don't need a passport to get into Canada if they're travelling by land or sea but do need one if they're flying. Same for Canadian citizens going to the US. Either way, if you're driving to Alaska before June, no passport required but you do need proof of citizenship and photo ID like a driver's licence. If you're not American or Canadian, you'll need a passport for any form of travel between the US and Canada.

You use to not have to, but the terrorists have changed all of that. I know my mom can get one for half the price about $40. for some special pass up to Canada from ND to go shopping across the border. I don't know what the stipulation is. A passport is normally $80. Personally I think it's a good idea to get one as you never know where you might want to go someday. I believe that they are good for 10 years. We have used ours twice going on cruises.
