As of today, YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT FOR TRAVEL BETWEEN THE USA AND CANADA. You can go anywhere in CANADA without a passport. You will need your driver's license and your birth certificate (not a copy).

HOWEVER, with that said, starting January 1, 2008 YOU WILL.

Here is the information from the USA Government:

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.

Here is the link for the U.S. Department of State with the above information: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

Here is the website for you to apply for an American Passport:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_832.html

You can print out and complete the application before you go to apply.

You have to submit your passport application at the post office.

Be aware not all post offices accept passport aplications and some only do it certain days and certain times of the day. Here is a link for you to find out the nearest place you can apply:

No, you do not NEED one but it sure makes it easier to get in and out. You can bring your driver's license or state ID and your birth certificate. That will suffice if you don't have or can't find your passport.

I needed one to go over the border.

A passport would get you through easier, but the license and Birth Cert. will do. If you have any kind of record with the police they may deny you entrance. I can't go because of a DWI from 2000.

no you dont need one.

Naw, you don't need crap. You might want to bring your drivers licence unless you plan on walking, but they will let you in. It's kinda like how America let's in all the mexicans without anything, just find the border and hop it dude.

No for right now.

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

December 31, 2006 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.

You don't need a passport at this time to come to Canada, just make sure you have your drivers licence and birth certificate, car registration, proof of insurance. Also don't forget to get your medical insurance just in case.
