I am an American living in Canada ... and yes, I shop Canadian. As indicated by others who answered, I also prefer to shop local owner-operated stores whenever possible. When shopping at a supermarket, its usually the Superstore, but our produce and meats, are all purchased at local markets.

When we do "shop american" we actually go over the border and shop in the states ... hubby prefers american cigarettes, and cheese, eggs, and some over the counter medicines/supplements are half the cost they are in canada.

Sometimes it's hard to tell. For example, Tim Horton's (which is undeniably entrenched in Canadiana) is owned (or was wholly owned before the public offering) by the same parent company as the restaurant chain Wendy's, which is American. I occassionaly consider going to 'Canadian' shops, but not usually.

I try, yes I try and try and try to shop Canadian, but it is increasingly difficult. Zellers (HBC) is now owned by an American company.

As for Timmies, I would rather buy coffee/doughnuts at an independent. No to Starbucks.

I buy groceries at Save-On, and avoid Safeway.

Why? Well I like to keep my money in my country and try to support Canadian culture.

Walmart sucks and treats their employees like crap - yet again Zellers is hardly better.

It's about 50/50 for me- I usually go to whichever is convenient. I went to Zellers yesterday because it was on my way to work but they didn't really have what I wanted and I wished I was at Wal-Mart. I really don't let where the company originated influence my choices.

Well yes because they mostly cater for Canadians before others, I guess! Or maybe it's automatic!

As a Canadian in a border city yes I shop at both Zellers and Wal-Mart. I get my groceries at Price Chopper, and Zerhs.

And as for Timmies it started out a fully Canadian company and about 10 years or so ago sold controlling interest to Wendy's. That's why people think it's always been American owned.

I try to shop Canadian whenever possible, but if I can't find what need, I will shop at whatever store offers what I need. As for why, national pride, Americans aren't the only ones who have pride in their country.

Yes, if I have to go to a Big Box store I go to Canadian Tire, but I try to shop locally at the smaller stores that support my community. ( Bobcaygeon ) The owners are part of and support the local economy. I shop for made in Canada products even if there is a price difference. No Wal-Mart ever for me.

The short answer is yes. And basically because they are the ones that bothered to be here. Zellers and Canadian Tire are the main stores in my small town. So I support them for that, as they have supported me with their presence.

However, Walmart has wanted to locate here and has been having trouble doing so. I don't think that is fair.

I will support a Canadian Retailer if all other things are equal. If their service is less or their prices higher, I will bail in a flash. Mostly because I don't want them using my Canadian identity as a Corporate tool or marketing campaign just to sell me stuff. I wont be their puppet. That reminds me of Americans.

The honest answer is I usually go to whichever is closer -- and until the price of gas drops considerably, I don't intend to go driving around when I'm shoping.

Well, there is no Wal-mart in my town...LOL and there is really no US owned companies here... I usually shop at Giant Tiger all Canadian and great prices! Really though I dont care either way I shop at whatever store has the best prices on the stuff I want. Heck I wouldnt know half of whats US owned and whats canadian owned.... and I certainly wouldnt discriminate based on that alone.

I like Wal-mart and Home Depot. Prices are better! And I like the selection.

As much as possible, none of these big box stores whether Canadian or US-owned. I try to shop at locally-owned small stores.

Often I choose Zellers over Wal-Mart. This way my money stays in the country longer.
