At age 53 too late to start working on the oil rigs?

My dad is thinking of working on the oil rigs, he's in pretty good shape but he's 53, are there a lot of men his age working there?

My husband had worked in all kinds of fields of work from Logging in very small outfits to cement work to paving work and construction. Being in small outfits you tend to do all ie: by running the machinery to fixing the machinery. He had started working on the rigs when he was 54. It is never too late to begin a new career. Especially if you are logical in your thinking and have a good varied work background.

my friend works in the rigs, and makes a sh!t load of money, if thats what he's looking for, he should start while its still going. My friend keeps saying how he doesn't think that working with the rigs is going to last long. I'd support him if thats what he wants to do. Hope he has an insider that can help him get a job, thats the hardest part! There are jobs that older guys can get, even if they aren't in the best of shape. My friends an oil tester, and he says a busy day is when he watches 3 movies! Yet still brings home $300 a day! There are lots of older guys working on the rigs, probably more as supervisors, where there is less work to do.

53 is not too old, he is just a matured man, yes he is physically and mentally capable to work anywhere even in outer space but these age 45 and up are prone to highblood, rheumatism, even diabetes and kidey problems. If an employer will hire him, let him. The question is if employers will employ him.

53 is not old.....but it is probably not a good age to START doing such a physically demanding job......

The problem is they have been wroking there for years. I don't know if they will hire him

53 is probably not too old if you don't mind your boss being much younger. By 53 one is usually pretty set in their ways and that usually includes work. Working the actual rig itself is demanding but he has to be prepared to be gone for weeks at a time. Good luck to him and I hope you all support him.

Surveyor
I'm 52 and I wouldn't do it.

If he's just starting out, he may have a hard time keeping up with the young bucks. I know its a taxing job and some of the rigs are downright freezing in the winter. Guys his age have worked their way up into the more cushy jobs....its really a mind set and of course the money is definately a incentive.
