Your best bet would be to stay downtown (best area: Yaletown - nice, trendy and close to hockey arena). Also OK downtown is Gastown, although it does start to get a little sketchy there. AVOID East Hastings & Main intersection and the general vicinity. Google map GM Place in Vancouver, and basically anything to the south-west of it is a good bet. You're most likely to pay a fortune to stay walking distance though..
GM Place (hockey) is right beside a skytrain station, so if you stay anywhere along the skytrain route (even out in the suburbs), you should be able to get around by transit (don't even think of getting a rental car around the olympics). Taxis may also have trouble getting around. Check out the bus and skytrain route at www.translink.bc.ca. |

Granville street is full of Bars and should be quite the festive area during the Olympics. So if you are okay with bars and drunks it should be fine. And it is late at night stuff, no usually mid afternoon drinkers. And it is a lot better than the East Side area that people are telling you to stay away from.
The walk to GM Place is under half an hour. A taxi is under $10. So walk unless it's raining or if you are late. |

its a bit of a walk but only a walk from 1018 granville to GM Place (the hockey venue). If you stay out of the eastside of the city east of main along east hastings you will be okay. |

I've lived at Samesun twice for a couple of months before I moved into a flat and y'know what, its not a bad little place to be. The people are friendly and there's a lot going on, it can be pretty noisy though so if you like your sleep get a room on the top floor. it is fairly pricy though and the bar underneath doesn't help. As for hockey, its about a 15 minute walk, you can pretty much walk anywhere but the skytrain is pretty handy.
Gastown is a super nice place to be, hastings is renown for its dodgyness but then again, every city has its sketchy sides...no one is out to harm you, and I've never felt threaten walking through there at night. Hope that helps! :) |

There are shootings everywhere in the Vancouver area. The lower east side is pretty grim, but on Granville you should be OK. It will be noisy there at night. |

That area you are looking at is right downtown and near everything.
They are beefing up all the transit systems for the Olympics, thus it will be easy getting around using public transportation barring the crowds.
The policing will be increased and the bad areas today will be safe then.
You better secure your hotel room `now`` if you want something for the «««««olympics. |
