Bush Sucks!

Becoming a Canadian Resident & Citizen, and Renouncing US Citizenship?

I'm a NATURAL-BORN & raised US citizen.

But though I love America & think that it has many GREAT qualities, sadly, there are just as many (if not more!) bad aspects, leaving me disillusioned & looking to make my permanent, primary home outside of the US & eventually renounce my citizenship.

There are MANY reasons (only one {and the least) of which is taxes) including this senseless Iraq war based on lies, the rash spending by greedy gov't while millions are out of work & uninsured, foreclosure is at an all-time high & people have to work 2-3 jobs yet still struggle to make ends meet.

The only thing keeping me here is sentimental ties to my childhood home & the local schools where I went & want my future kids to go. Luckily, they accept non-resident tuition students & since I live close to the Canada border (30-45 min drive downtown & trip across bridge or tunnel) commuting's no problem & requires no visa.

How do I become a resident (& eventually citizen) of Canada?
Additional Details
There are LOTS other reasons I want to leave the US, including the discrimination against homosexuals, especially the wacko fundamentalist Christians forcing government to strike down the legalization of gay marriage (though I'm not gay, myself). Also, the greedy IRS and government with their INSANE taxes for almost everything under the sun! (Property taxes, income taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes, estate taxes, airport taxes, telephone taxes, utility bill taxes, etc., where and when does it end??) and not to mention the almost complete erosion of our constitutional rights through the "Patriot Act", under the guise of supposed "national security".

Did you all know that apart from Libya (LIBYA!) the United States is the ONLY country to tax citizens on worldwide income no matter where in the world they live, or how long they have been out of the US, or even if they have NEVER set foot here!

If that's not bad enough, US can tax former citizens worldwide for up to 10 YEARS later!

Being American has an advantage as far as living and working here. Essentially..you can "test drive" our country a little easier than those of other nationalities. Residing and even owning property here is much easier for you. That's the "test drive" part.
You'll still have to go through the same steps towards Canadian citizenship as everyone else though. We allow dual citizenship, so if you're not ready to renounce your American status, that's fine. It won't matter to us nor will it impact your status during the citizenship process. The NAFTA agreement is also in your favour and can streamline the entire process a bit.
Here are two web pages you should visit first as everyone's situation is a little different.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/index.asp
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/index.asp
Choose your path on those pages according to your own circumstances.
You sound like a person of conscience so bear in mind that the last step on your road to Canadian citizenship is the Oath you must make.
"I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen."
If you're ok with that, especially the last bit, you'll do fine here.
Good luck / Bon chance.
Cheers

check your facts on Canadian taxes, especially on sales and GST

So you want to come up here, not pay any taxes, still send your kids to school in the States and basically hide out here?

Are you wanting to help make Canada a better place or just avoid the US?

Im telling ya that the fact is Canada has taxes too. They have PST (provincial sales tax) and GST (general sales tax) combined for about 15-16% total taxes. So dont think that the US is the only place with high taxes.

I think you will find that the good ole USA wasn't so bad after all when you are on the outside looking in, but hey what do I know? Don't let the door hit you on the soft backside.
