British Canadians are you offended when.....?

immigrants from other countries come to Canada and denounce having the queen as your monarch? I know a lot of Canadians have British decent so do you think having the queen as your monarch is part of your heritage?

The sad fact is, most Canadians including the above person who answered, don't understand that we are not a colony of England. Canada is an independent country, a federation comprising ten provinces and three territories, that is also both a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy.

Queen Elizabeth II, while the Queen of England, is also officially the Queen of Canada and as such is our head of state. If people really looked into the realities of it all they may understand how it works and be able to speak authoritatively on it rather then perpetuating myths.

We have the same problem with new immigrants coming here. The Govt and our institutions don't do enough to educate them and therefore they do not understand either. Perhaps thats one of the reasons why the Govt is looking at reforming immigration a bit.

I suppose being ... mostly french Canadian I'm not truly qualified to answer this question.

I personally think the monarchy is a bit redundant. I just don't see the point of them in Canadian politics. They're not Canadian. I dont' see why they should have such an impotant position in our politics. So when others criticize the monarchy I just think "Others see the problem with this system too." I personally think it is a good sign. They're getting involved in the country - they care how its run. They want to make improvements. They feel accepted enough in the community that they can voice their true opinions - they don't feel the need to lemming along to the dominant opinions. I think them saying negative things towards the monarchy is better than them not saying anything at all because they feel excluded from Canadian society.

Legally we may be seperated from England. But as long as we're willing to submissively accept their monarch as our head of state we're symbolically still colonies. That's my opinion. It's not misinformation, its the honest truth.

The English weren't the only 'creators' of the state of Canada. The French inhabited the land known as Canada long before the English. And lets not forget the millenia or so of native inhabitance. Moreover there is a difference between celebrating English culture by playing cricket, singing god save the queen, eating yorkshire pudding and installing your monarch as head of state. Having the monarch as head of state isn't celebrating the British culture, it's using hegemonic powers of the majority to force it upon everyone.

That's like someone going to the US and denouncing the president. The Queen is our Monarch. Period. And it doesn't matter whether you are of British descent, German descent, or Samoan descent. She is the Queen. If immigrants choose to come to Canada, then the Queen is part of the package.

The best way to answer your question is to ask another one. To those immigrants who denounce having the Queen as our head of state - why is it alright to honour your heritage from Asia or India or wherever but it's not alright to honour the heritage of those of us whose ancestors actually created this country that you're so fortunate to now call home?

i think you are being presumptive by thinking that immigrants from non-british lands denounce the Queen. I find that Canadians of all backgrounds denounce the queen and are working diligently towards making a republic.

Kilty
Canada is a Constitutional Democracy. As such, the Queen is also our Queen, and has all the rights and privileges with that position.

No. It doesn't really make sense to my why she is still the Head of State. It's historically significant, but it's time to stop being a colony, even if its only a symbolic relationship today.

I fully understand Canada is an independant country, but the reality is that continuing to have the Queen as the head of state implies that we are still a colony and can't stand on our own as a nation.

No, they still have their loyalties to the leader from where they came from and their home will always be in their heart.

.
yes it's part of our heritage and yes I'm offended, if they don't like it then don't come to Canada..
