I am not from Canada, but I want to express my hatred towards these groups of individuals who ban certain breeds. ANY breed can be vicious, it it the HUMANS HUMANS HUMANS that make them like this, not ANYTHING ELSE...All this dog fighting ****, no wonder. And did you know that in the USA, the Dachund is considered the number one most aggressive dog? A 8 pound dog - are you serious??!! Insanity.
I think to ban any animal is wrong. I know PLENTY of people who own pits, shepards, and rotties, etc and I play with them at the dog park when I take my dog. People need to worry about the real things, like child rapists or murderers, not this. Stop animal cruelty, and animals will not become aggressive, due to HUMAN NATURE.
My best friend has a pit/chow mix, she looks all pit. Some lady was petting and rolling around playing with her pit one day and she asked her breed. My friend told her and she was like "Really, o my God!!!!" And seemed disgusted she was petting a pit, but then continued playing with her. IGNORANT!!!
If anyone has an issue with animal lovers expressing their hatred toward this, please keep it to yourself, because you are just as ignorant. These animals do not ask to be abandoned or fought and become like this. The shelters are so overcrowded, and a majority of the dogs are the "vicious" breeds. When a dog is brought to a shelter, they are put through rigorous behavioral training to see how they handle certain situations, such as with food aggression, territory and small children and other animals. Know the facts before you have something negative to say.
Thank you and have a nice day!! |

I'm a Yank, but I agree with you. Some of the best household pets available are pit bulls. It's the human influence that makes some of them mean - and you can turn any dog into a dangerous, aggressive fighting machine. Tell your provincial government to punish those people, not the poor dogs! |

No! But I understand it.
I agree that it is Some owners who make Some Pit Bulls mean and vicious. If there was a gene that told us who would grow up to be like that, we could manipulate the genes or abort the fetus. We don't!
Unfortunately, Pit Bulls who are trained to be vicious are 4 legged killing machines. Since we cannot narrow down those who would teach a dog meanness, we have to eliminate the dog for reasons of public safety.
If a mean person with a vicious dog moves in next door to you and kills or maims your child, best friend, Mother, Father or anyone you hold dear, you would perhaps understand why the powers that be have felt it necessary to ban the dog. If you watched helplessly while it tore up a total stranger, you would feel differently. Putting yourself in the victims spot makes it a whole lot more understandable.
I know all Pit Bulls are not bad - had one next door to me several years ago and he was a beautiful and loving dog. So is it Fair? No! But Mean dog owners are not fair. And for that matter, life isn't fair. We do what we have to until a better solution arises.

Not at all. When you actually look at the statistics out of 300 dog attacks in Ontario only 1 was a pittbull that attacked someone.
I think there should be much tougher laws for pet owners. Why punish a dog for doing what it was trained to do. Punish the trainer.
I've trained many dogs and other animals and pitties are some of the best dogs I've come across. I've even considered leaving the province to own one at some point. |

I don't agree 100% with it........There needs to be something done about the irresponsible people who are backyard breeders however. Too many people inbreed them, sell em cheap to less than desirable people, who cannot even take care of themselves....all to make a quick buck. Also, media glorification makes a pitt appealing to someone who wants a "scary" dog. With inbreeding comes greater chance of aggression. I wish there was some sort of license needed to own an animal. Also, I have encountered many a pitt owner out in public places, who finds it funny when their dog is out of control, yanking on the leash, trying to get at another dog, or a person.........I agree, its the owners, not the dogs.....but it seems that all too many of the wrong type of person wishes to own a pitt........how can we make them less desirable to people like these?? Maybe by making it illegal for anyone to own one that was not purchased from a breeder, with up to date vet records, who must wear a muzzle in public??
I own two HUGE Bull Mastiffs and will be adding a Pug to the mix after Christmas. I love dogs. I hate to see them mistreated, abused and neglected........but I am not sure what other solution there can be. We can punish the owners all we want, but what good does it do after the fact? Perhaps making them less readily available is the solution, but not to the point of extinction. |

I don't think banning a particular breed is really going to make a difference, since as others have said, any dog that is mistreated or trained to be that way could bite or kill people.
However, what they are saying is that some breeds have the "attack" traits that have been bred into them over several generations. And if owners are not aware of that trait and make sure to train their dogs properly, then attacks will happen.
I was witness to a pit bull attack. A group of adults were out at a summer camp picking raspberries, when the dog suddenly bolted from a neighbouring cottage and attacked a family friend. She turned and raised her hand as he approached which was why she needed 40 stitches and physio in her arm instead of it going for her neck. I don't know if the dog thought our friend was a rabbit or deer in the bushes, but it did not respond to its owners calls for obedience, and was in full attack mode.
So although I agree that banning a breed is not necessarily the solution, I think something does need to be done to control animals that have attack mode in their instincts.
Perhaps mandatory obedience classes would be enough to give you the right to own any dog over a certain size or weight? Or holding the owner accountable financially or criminally if their pet attacks someone? |

Yes. Pit Bulls were bred to kill.
If you're an American, don't even think of critisizing how us Canadians protect ourselves. You guys also have a right to bear arms, and have over ten thousand murders a year. I would never take advice from you. |
