You can pretty well go anywhere in Calgary during the day and be reasonably safe, but you should be a little choosy where you live.

I wouldn't live in the North East - it's mostly lower income families and gangs. The cost of living downtown is sky-high and there is also criminal activity there at night. Forest Lawn is one of the worst ones. I remember reading a story about parents being fed up at the prostitution in their playgrounds - they kept finding used condoms and used syringes there. That's not only disgusting, it's dangerous to children, and this stuff was all over the playground. There's some higher than average theft in Bowness (also many lower-income families).

Most of the North West is pretty good (I used to live in Silver Springs) but I much prefer the new communities in the South East. I currently live in Mckenzie Towne, and I really like the community.

Forest Lawn has a bad reputation, it's a well known fact

Forest Lawn sucks for sure. But so does Marlborough!
If I could have my pick out of anywhere to live in the city, I would choose McKenzie Towne... it's moderately priced and newer.

If you are moving to Calgary, stick to the newer south east and south west communities.
Avoid Forest Lawn and Inglewood.
Try Sundance, Shawnessy, Chaparel, Cranston, Auburn Bay, Evergreen, Mackenzie Town.
Most often when you hear of crimes in Calgary, they come from the north side of town.

There are no real ghetto places in Calgary like you would see in the US. Some neighborhoods are more desirable than others. NW Calgary is what I would call desirable and have never heard of any bad areas. You are safe in your choice.

If you want to see the crime rates of different neighbourhoods, i suggest you go to:

http://www.calgarypolice.ca/news/stats_community.html#W

It has safe reliable info. If i do say so myself, stay away from Forest lawn, in the NE!

You are safe wherever you choose because its up to you.

The North East in general is pretty "ghetto" like. Also, some parts of downtown are kind of "ghetto".
