Fellow Aussie here living in Ontario Canada. I feel very much at home here most of the Canadians are very much like Aussies, good sense of humour, love their beer, friendly, love a beer, very accepting of foreigners, did i mention they love a beer?
This country is just gorgeous, where i am(Wasaga Beach is the longest freshwater beach in the world, its amazing sand just like Aussie beaches
they eat some funny stuff here, peanut butter with chocolate, root beer GROSS

they have cute critters (smelly ones too)you have NO idea how much a skunk stinks!

5 best things... hmm
1) Most health care services covered by taxes rather then having to pay every time you see a doctor

2) rich diversity

3) great arts community. Lots of writers, musicians, artists, comedians, actors ect.

4) It's a big country with amazing habitats and wildlife

5) Relatively cheep universities. At least where I go.

3 things I don't like

1) Newfie jokes because 90% are not that funny.

2) snow. I think everyone agrees

3) I get annoyed when kids know who George Washington is but have no idea who John A Macdonald is.

old lady
The five best things about living in Canada would be:
It is a beautiful and varied country. It is one of the largest nations in the world, and the terrain varies from rocky mountain ranges through flat prairie land. Canada has more water than any other nation on earth, which is a real plus in this day and age. Canada has a government which responds to the wishes of the people, and which supports things like universal health care, quality education, health and welfare programs for the indigent and troubled. Canada accommodates a number of different cultures, ranging from native indians to immigrants from every corner of the globe, and melds them with the two founding nations, French and English. It is a racially tolerant nation, one which offered refuge to the slaves fleeing from pre-Civil War America, and which has continued to be racially tolerant.
Three things i would want to change? Hmmmm . Perhaps to decentralize the provinces and help the smaller, more northern communities to grow and have the opportunity of economic benefits that the southern parts of Canada have enjoyed. I would like to see university education made available to all qualified students, tuition free. And I would like to see improved rapid transit systems - systems (perhaps even free usage systems) that would pry people out of their cars and cut down on the pollution from having too many cars on the road.
Loved visiting your country - and we think your accents are fair dinkum!

Lona
Love your pic. I have a photo of my Mom holding you.

The best thing about living in Canada is it's not the USA or some other third world country.
Less crowded than Europe

Negatives-our party politicians are as stupid as anyone else's.
The weather like most of the planet sucks.

Been to Australia and New Zealand felt like being at home.

pinkpiglet126
Best:

1. Scenery I live in Alberta, less then one hour from the Rocky Mountains. I don't think I could ever move away from here. Prairies out one window and mountains out the other.

2. Everything everyone else has said. *grin*

"ole man is back" talked about Sir John A MacDonald being a drunk, etc. He is right. Sir John was something else! LOL Our politicians at least have some character compared to the politicians in some other countries. They are (or at least used to be) real people who get into real situations.

Just as an interesting aside - Sir John's wife came out to the west once to ride the train through the mountains. She loved the view but couldn't see enough through the windows so she had them stop the train and she climbed out onto the cattle guard on the front of the train and roade there through the mountains. *grin* She loved it!

elementoflife
Only 5 best things?? lol

1. The variety of scenery and feel of the landscape- from the east coast rugged hills, smell of salt water and the red earth, to the rolling hills and maple trees in Quebec and Ontario. Moving into Manitoba, the beautiful, isolated lakes with gorgeous beaches, on to the prairies and wide open skies of eastern Manitoba through Saskatchewan and Alberta. The magnificent river valleys of Saskatchewan break up the sense of serenity of the warm winds blowing through wheat fields of the prairies. The majestic mountains of the Rockies force you to remember how small you really are. The semi-arid hills of British Columbia's interior where you'll see wine growers etching out a living, leads to the west coast where you will see whales swimming below you while you sit on the coast line watching bald eagles flying overhead, landing in some of the largest trees you'll ever see, all this while basking in a warm sunset! We can't forget about the NWT, Nunuvut and the Yukon where you'll see some of the rarest sights on earth, such as polar bears, muskox and herds of caribou numbering in the thousands. You'll be able to watch these animals at 12:30am in the summer because it's still light at that time.

I think I have covered what I love about Canada. I have lived or visited all regions in Canada and love the landscape where ever I go! I also love the people, particularly out east. I am grateful for our health care system and our subsidized secondary schooling (University and College). I also like the fact that we have high immigration rates and there seems to be a fairly liberal mind set here (although it's less in Alberta than anywhere else that I have lived in Canada)

What I don't like? The drive by some provincial governments to get the oil and gas out of the ground without consideration for the land, Our living under the US shadow, and the fact that it cost me more to go from Alberta (western Canada) to Montreal (eastern Canada) than it does to go to London, England! lol

Cheers!

Oh so weeeee're the ones with the accents now, eh!

hah just joking.

1. If you look outside of Toronto, there's always a beatiful piece of landscape (be it mountains, lakes, the ocean, snow....)

2. Which brings me to my second point: there's a whole lot of diversity in Canada to suit your needs.
-You got Montreal an Quebec City who feel very much like European cities.
-You got the Northern provinces which are very desolate
-You got the big cities, if you're a city kind of guy.
-You got the maritimes... just go there, you'll see how different it is to the rest of Canada

3. (Generalization) Americans are friendly and so are we. However, we are more socially stimulating people and we as Canadians are more tolerant towards different cultures. Basically we're better then americans and have more style.

4. We have one of the Highest standards of living (life expectancy, education, economy.......) in the World (4th) while Norway is 1st, Australia is 3rd and the US is 12th. Basically it's saying living here is pretty damn awsome.

5. Our accents apparently... We have many here.

Three things that suck:

-we barely have any History or Culture to be proud of except for the Great Sport that is Hockey. (ie: If you're a big rugby fan, you'll get into watching hockey in no time, trust me)

Also in culture: our ladies aren't as sexy as yours, however in general terms they're quite alright if you know what i'm saying ;). Plus we don't have a "food" that is true to our culture unless you count Maple Syrup.

-I f****ing hate our Winter.

-Everything is far appart (ex. If you wanna get to a friends house, school, a particular store.) Travel time up lots of time, especially if you have to take the bus. Also makes for higher petrol costs.

1- The diversity of people, cultures and views
2- The freedom of expression...freedom of everything really
3- The land...one trip to the Rockies and you'll understand
4- The education and health care systems, helps us raise smart and healthy babies.
5- The beer :) Any Canadian beer is good :)

My dislikes -
The weather has to be number one, I don't do anything outside in the winter.
We hold on to the monarchy to this day, despite them not doing anything for us really...as an Aussie, I'm sure you can relate.
Mosquitoes in the summer :(

As for your beer question...you'll find a lot of Molson drinkers out there...their best beer is Canadian...here's one of the best known beer commercials in Canada...

The Canadian

Hey
I am not a lumberjack, or a fur trader.
I don't live in an igloo,
or eat blubber, or own a dogsled,
and I don't know Jimmy, Suzy, or Sally from Canada,
although I am certain they are really, really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a President
I speak English and French, not American
I pronounce it "About" not "a boot"
I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack
I believe in Peacekeeping, not policing
Diversity, not Assimilation
and that the Beaver is a proud and noble animal.
The Toque is a hat,
A Chesterfield is a couch,
and "Z" is pronounced "ZED" not "ZEE", "ZED"
Canada is the second largest land mass,
The first nation of hockey, and
THE BEST PART OF NORTH AMERICA!!
My Name is "Joe", and
"IAM CANADIAN!!!"

And another...

Here's to You
Here's to you Canada

Here's to your hockey hair
Your long underwear
And multi coloured money
Here's to saying please
Your ducks and geese
And always being funny

Here's to open spaces
Away from rat races
And a beer that quenches the thirst
Here's to being proud
And saying it loud
Even when you don't come first

Here's to your pretty girls
Your black coloured squirrels
And a flag that stands so free
Here's to different races
From different places
Who love this country - like me

But most of all
Here's to standing tall and saying it like a true Acadian
"I love this land, I love this country", and
"I am Canadian!"
Cheers!

I was born in New Zealand, moved to Canada at 1 years of age.

I love Canada because where I live I can swim in warm waters in the summer while looking at snow-capped mountains. It's amazing!

I can surf and snowboard in the same day if I want to.

General Patton-we don't say AYE...we say EH!

My "little corner of Canada" is on the far west coast (Victoria on Vancouver Island)

BEST THINGS:
1-Not nearly as conservative as the usa
-We have legalized abortions and only a few dumba$$es ever talk about making them illegal (where as in the u-s-of-a a few states have made them illegal...OMG)
-We FINALLY legalized gay marriages!!
-We have tighter rules on owning guns..and we don't feel the need to carry one with us at all times (thus we have fewer deaths do to gun shots)
-TO SUM IT UP, I'D LIKE TO THINK THAT CANADA IS PRETTY OPEN MINDED (although we definitely are not without conservative minded, racist, homophobic, ect ect people)

2-We have A LOT of natural beauty-old growth forests, the great lakes (and MANY other lakes of course), two oceans, the Rocky Mountains!! Hot springs, tundra's ect ect!!!! HOT summers and COLD winters...or in the case of the west coast, pretty mild all year round!

3-We don't try as hard to assimilate people from other countries/cultures as much as I've seen and heard about in the usa...we (to generalize a whole population) try to bring traditions, customs, food, dance, clothing(some) ect from many different cultures into the 'mainstream' culture of Canada!

4-I think we must be one of the top countries for the amount of variety of foods and restaurants that we have. You can probably find food from every country around the world somewhere in Canada-and this is especially true in the biggest cities-Toronto and Vancouver (not sure about Montreal as I haven't been there)

5-We produce LOTS of great stuff!! Maple Syrup, Hockey Players, Comedians, Fresh Water, Lumber, Water Bombers (planes), Nurses (brain drain down to the usa), Smarties (chocolate)

And of course our national health care system....

NOT SO GOOD THINGS:
1-We don't have a national policy for low income housing...but do have a huge increase in housing prices in many areas of the country-thus leading to even more homelessness

2-We do not have national, provincial, or municipal plans (that I know of) on what to do to prevent homelessness and/or lessen the numbers living on our streets (a few people froze to death last winter because they were sleeping outside...that's disgusting for a 'developed country'...shaaammmmeful)

3-It's EXPENSIVE to travel across Canada...by plane, train, or automobile (or bus) it's pricey....as is housing if you want to live on the west coast...

Hope that helps!!!
ps-I LOVVVVVE the aussie accent!! ;)

gen patton
well, canadians don't say, mate. they say AYE, after everything. but, most are very nice people. (just like aussies)

ole man is back
john a MacDonald couldn't hold George Washington's jock strap.gw was a giant of a man loved and RESPECTED by ALL.Sir john was a dirty politician,he was convicted of accepting bribes and embezzlement,he was a drunk and was not well liked by anyone, too bad he's our first PM
he had to hide out for 10 years to live down his reputation

edit

wow! what with all the thumbs down????not like I'm making anything up,I'm just saying that Canadians have a reason for not idolizing sir john.He wasn't a good PM,and it's not fair to compare him to GW,there is a reason GW is a hero to Americans.read some books on him,you will be surprised!!
