recently, due to the backlog of applications, the Dept of Homeland Security decided to postpone the requirement for passports to travel to and from Canada. This summer you'll be safe with just a driver's license. Don't bet on getting away with that much longer though.

I recently phoned the Canadian consulate, I'm Canadian. They told me I could drive over the border with a Drivers license but when flying I would need a passport for my 4 1/2 yr old son.

If you are driving it will be fine, but have him bring some form of proof that he is an American citizen. His birth certificate would be a good choice.

"CANADA – Passport or proof of U.S. citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and photo ID required. Minors (under 16) traveling alone or in someone else’s custody must present written authorization, signed before a notary, from the parent(s) or guardian."

until 2008 you can drive in to Canada with out a passport, but i have heard many Us citizens are having trouble getting back in to the US without one so id check with the US before coming

Yep you need a passport anytime you go into another country. However you only need one. Not one for each country, that would be expensive.
