Can I open a bank account in Canada even though I live in the US and dont have a Canadian mailing address?

Id like to open a bank account in Canada but my license has a US mailing address. Will the bank let me open an account without a Canada address? Thanks a lot ===

Probably not. Due to American phobias about terrorism, our banks require personal application with photo ID, and are highly reluctant to open accounts for non-residents (too easy to launder money).

No problem. I worked for the Toronto Dominion Bank for 20 years.
One thing to note is any interest earned will be subject to non-resident witholding tax but since we have tax reciprocity with the US, tax paid here is offset when you file your American return.

YES - go to one of Canada's Banks such as the Royal Bank or Bank of Nova Scotia - rather than a Foreign Bank.

old lady
Yes you can, just as Canadians can open bank accounts in the US without having a US mailing address.

Yes you can, I did it at Scotia bank when I lived fulltime in the US

I don't see why not? I use Royal Bank up here in Ontario. I am Canadian and have a US account with them with only my Canadian address. Have you asked your bank if they are able to open a Canadian account for you? If not, contact Royal Bank or any other Canadian Bank. I listed a few that are up here in Ontario so you can call them and find out which bank might be best for you.

if there is a HSBC bank in the US you will be able to as they do global banking it could take a few weeks though, i'm in the middle of setting a canadian bank account up with them and i live in the UK

Canadian Ken
Yes. I work for HSBC and I don't want to make it sound like I pushing my company (to much)....but we do have alot of clients in the US.

Go to either website....USA or Canada and check it out. Good luck

yes. the US will require you to declare the account on fed. tax return

Yes, but you'll be asked for verifiable US ID. And subject to Canadian taxes on any interest. And expect to be monitored by George W. Bush's gestapo.

Instead of following serena g's and Canadian Ken's advice - HSBC is a British institution even though it operates also in both Canada and the USA - I'd advise you check first with the Canadian banks that are expanding into the USA. Toronto Dominion bank has been very successful so far with branches all over the northeastern States. It's American operation is TD Bank North and is headquartered in Lewiston, Maine. They have a very, very good customer service office; I'm sure its 800 number can be found at TD Bank North's website (I, who have both American and Canadian TD bank accounts, have personal experience being served by it). Royal Bank of Canada is also expanding in central and southern parts of the USA but has had difficulties. I think its called just RBC Bank for its US operations, headquartered I think in North Carolina. And I believe I read something recently that Bank of Montreal has just begun an American operation, in Chicago as I recall.
