Can I rent a car in N.Y. and cross the border to Canada?

Yes you can provided you advised the rental car company that you were doing so. For liability reasons they need to be aware.

Now that I gave the offical, legal response let me say we do this in Michigan all the time and have never advised the car company we were doing so and have never had a problem at the border crossing or otherwise. Most rental cars have unlimited mileage anymore so that isn't usually an issue either. Have fun!

dogjj
no because you are going out of the usa.

sunpekes
Sure but you need to tell the rental company where your going.

yes but usually the rental company wants to know if you plan on crossing the border

It's all about the insurance. If you rent a car and plan on leaving the state then you need to tell them. If you don't and get into an out-of-state accident, they'll take you for everything you own.

the_secrets_keeper
Yes you can however this depends on the company you are renting from (mostly because of mileage). You should ask them
