Yes. The new passport requirement is for AIR travel only. You will need a passport for other types of travel starting in Jan. 2008. Go to the web site listed below to read for yourself for your own peace of mind.

THIS YEAR, you will get away with it.
BUT if you had a medical emergency and HAD to fly home, you would be STUCK!!! So get a passport to be safe.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

The US has currently passed a law that was effective on Tuesday, January 23rd that requires EVERYONE (im assuming that means US citizens that are flying in from a vacation) that is flying into the US to carry a passport. there will soon be a law requiring people who are traveling by road, Air and Sea entering the USA to carry a passport.

You will need government issued photo ID with your original birth certificate to be able to come by car. (birth certificate proves your citizenship, government issued photo ID says you are who you say) I emphasize the "original" birth certificate because some people think a photo copy is good enough; it's not.

As someone mentioned, it is a US based law that is causing all the kurfuffle on passports etc. So coming to Canada isnt what is and will change. I am assuming you will want to go home to the USA...and that is where the new rules come in.

By air: now need passport to enter USA (effective Jan. 23, 2007)
By land & sea: passport needed at the soonest Jan 2008, again to enter the USA (date keeps changing, keep an eye on this one)

If you get a chance to get a passport when the line ups slow down, I would suggest it. It will just make your life easier. It is also better in case you get your wallet stolen.

Enjoy your trip!

Maybe - but will you be able to get back into the US. It is the US that has made that you need a passport to fly into the US from Canada I believe next year you will need one for driving over the boarder. Not actually sure what our (Canadian rules are)
