Can I travel to Canada on probation? |
Last August (08) I got hit with a DUI (first) and probation (unsupervised) for 1 year. If I wanted to go to Montreal for a weekend would I have a problem crossing the border?
Additional Details
Is there anything sort of paperwork I could get from my probation officer that would make me admissible? |

Any criminal offense (and DUI qualifies) will result in you being considered "inadmissible" to Canada.
If you are asked about any criminal record and you tell the truth about the DUI, you will likely be turned away. If you lie about the conviction and are caught, you are guilty of a criminal offense (Providing false information to a peace officer). That will most certainly get you turned away and possibly another criminal conviction on your record, which could affect your probation.
The only advice I have would be not to try to come to Canada until five years have passed since your DUI conviction. At that point, you may still need to apply to be considered "rehabilitated" before they let you in.
People do not realize the severity of things like driving under the influence until it affects their activities later in life, or causes another family sorrow. Hopefully, this conviction will be your last and perhaps can get this one infraction expunged after a few years so it does not come back to haunt you. |

I wouldn't chance it. Go somewhere else, if you don't tell them or lie you'll be detained. My friend had a DUI and wasn't allowed in Canada at all for a while. And that was WAY before the borders got as strict as they are.
Go somewhere else and hit Montreal next year. And don't drink and drive anymore. |

One of the standard prohibitions in a probation order is ...
Not allowed to leave the USA, and in some cases, not allowed to leave the state in which the probationer lives.
Ask the probation officer, that has your case, or call the state probation office and ASK them.
As has all ready been said, Canadian law will not allow you to enter, as a convicted criminal.
