Can I visit my girlfriend in Canada if I'm from the United States even though we met online?

I met her online and was curious if I could visit my girlfriend in Canada safely? Meaning could I actually visit and stay with her for a while even though we met online? Would Canadian Customs/Border officers refuse me since I met her meeting her online?
Additional Details
Will they actually let me in if I just say I'm going to visit a friend though? Wouldn't they want to know other stuff?

shouldnt be a problem

Yes you can enter Canada as long as you have proper papers and no criminal record. If you are running away from the police they will also find that out.'
Please be very certain that the person you intend to visit is who she says she is and not some guy trying to lure you into a very dangerous or unwanted situation. Check it out thoroughly before you go.
Have fun if it all checks out, Canada is a great and friendly place with lots of snow right now.

Yes, they will stop you at the border. There is so much child molestation problems because of the internet--they'd think twice. I'm not saying your girlfriend is a minor, but Customs doesn't know that, so she'd better have proof of residency--ie) she owns a home or rents an apartment.. Customs will then check to see if she is of legal age to accept guests from the US. They can check that and more as you sit at the border. Telephone calls, internet comms, electric bills--to verify she is who she says she is, and Stateside, they'll check to see if you are who you say you are.

there are no visa requirements for visiting Canada. You may not have any fellonies though. To get back into the US you will need positive ID and proof of citzenship if driving or a passport if travelling by other means.

You are gonna need a passport but you won't have to tell them why you are entering the country. Why wouldn't you juct book a hotel room and meet her in public places until you are comfortable enough to meet her at her residence. Don't get jacked. Good luck.

There is no reason they wouldn't let you cross the border just because you met the person you're visiting online.

Just have a passport and proper proof of identification, and don't bring any weapons with you.

They will ask you where you are going, "to visit a friend", how long "less then six months, that is the amount of time you are allowed to stay", you may also be asked to provide a phone number, and address of the place you are going. They may ask you what you plan on doing in Canada, how much money you have, ect.
I would bring a passport, and I wouldn't mention you only met your friend online.

Dashing Geek
They will ask why you are going to Canada, and you respond "To see a friend." That's it. You need a passport to go to Canada now.

Have fun! Canada is awesome.

First of all, it's none of their business that you met her online--unless she's a minor. You can say you're visiting a friend. Since when is it illegal to meet someone you love? Have fun! :)
