The birth certificate is used to prove country of origin, or birth, not country of residence. It does not have to be the original birth certificate, but it must be a certified copy of the birth certificate. |

question.
can the one that the hospital gives you be used to go to mexico(coming back also of course)? I have the one with the seal and the foot prints on the back.
The passport agency has the one that i obtained from the state and i'm wondering if this one will work in the meantime? |

An OFFICIAL copy which usually means notarized or certified... That is what you need. |

Copies dont work in any situations that ive encountered. I attempted to use a copy to get a state ID in another state and they needed the original. |

No it cannot be used. Only original documents can be used.
An original document has many fraud prevention things in it, some public knowledge and some not. These stop people from tampering with the facts on a birth certificate. A photocopy is no better than a verbal statement-which also is no longer accepted.
Also, a birth certificate is not "proof of residence". A birth certificate can be used for proof of citizenship. (a person can be born in Ottawa, but reside in Newfoundland etc) For those under 18 they need an original proof of citizenship to cross the border by land. (by air passports are required)
Depending on the province, you can order birth certificates online and have them back in 15 days. (you would check with the province of birth for their regulations) |

I live 5 minutes away from one of the Canadian borders, I am 20 years old and use a copy of my birth certificate. My boyfriend uses an original and the security guy actually told him that he should make a copy and store the original somewhere else. |

Usually they require original documents. |

It needs to be the official birth certificate that you apply to the state for, not a copy. The one that is issued by the hospital will not work copy or original. |

nope only originals, because you can make a copy and it can be forged a whole lot of things can be done so only the orriginals, and anyways you have to have a passport to enter canada, and to be able to get back into the united states. |
