Can a Canadian Visa be used at an American ATM to withdraw cash in USD?

Yes. I am from the US and have successfully used a credit card to withdraw cash in Canada and Mexico from ATMs.

One thing you will want to do is call Visa and let them know you will be travelling though. Otherwise they might flag your card as stolen.

Yes. Look at the names you frequently see at the back of the card: Interac, Plus, Cashstop, etc. These names are frequently posted on ATMs in the USA and some in Europe too. It means that the card will be accepted.

gpatrick900
You might be better to use it for purchases. Cash advances cost more. The other poster is correct. You should notify the bank that you will be using the card in the U.S.

However, if you do use an atm. Find one that does not hold your card, while you do the transaction. This will prevent the card from been swallowed.

check the network logos on the back of your card. the most common are interac, acculink, cirrus, plus and visa itself

anywhere you go in the world, you can use your card at any machine displaying at least one matching logo

Fred C
Visa and Mastercard are worldwide cards. As long as the Visa/PLUS ATM network symbol is on the ATM, the Visa card will work. A Mastercard will work in a MasterCard, Maestro or Cirrus ATM. Your card will be charged at the exchange rate of the day.

Yes it can.

Just look for the logo behind the card on the ATM.

Usually they are Cirrus or Plus or both.
