As a citizen of Canada, US, or Mexico, you will need a valid passport to ENTER the US by air after 01 January 2007.

Since your flight is going to originate in the US (and presumably return there), you will ALSO need the passport to fly out of a US airport.

Customs and immigration (and airlines in general) are looking for passports for all international flights, to be checked BEFORE passing through security and into the waiting lounge for your flight.

If you're a citizen of a country other than US, Canada, or Mexico - you will have to have a passport regardless of how you travel.

Why not? Thousands of Canadians do it every day out of Syracuse, Buffalo, Detroit, Rochester, etc.

Sure. If it is an international flight you will need a passport.

If it is an American domestic flight you will need ID like your drivers license.
