You can cross into Canada any time any day as long as you have a driver's license. They don't check for felonies unless you apply for a work visa.

You will however have to have a passport or serious proof that you are a US citizen to get back in. I go to Canada a lot and I only ever have trouble getting back in.

Have FUN and behave yourself.

You might be prohibited from entering Canada if you have been convicted of certain minor or criminal activities. Some of these are: theft, assault, dangerous driving, driving while intoxicated, manslaughter and other crimes. Some of the issues taken into consideration include whether you have beeen granted a pardon, have been found guilty of more than one crime, the length of time since your conviction and whether you have recieved rehabiltation. (which has to be proven). Read more about that and how to apply for rehabilition staus in the provided website. If you are still on parole for an offence you will probably not be admitted. You may possibly be exempt from these rules if it was an offence committed as a juvenile. All of the information regarding this and other information on entering the country and the conditions are outlined in the government website below. Hope this information is of help and answers some of your questions.

A friend of my mom's was going with his family for a reunion and they would not let him in because 20 years ago he had gotten a DUI/DWI. I would definitely check before making the trip.

Canada can choose to deny you entry with a felony on your record. In my personal experience crossing the border (I've lived on both sides and have made 100s of crossings) they won't even check into your background or even ask you about a criminal record. You'll need ID and proof of citizenship to get back into the States, but likely all they'll do on the way up is ask you your citizenship, where you live, the purpose of your visit, how long you plan on staying and whether you have any valuable to declare.

If you have a valid passport, yes, but I don't know if you can get a passport.

Probably not. I know a guy who had a DUI (misdemeanor) and they would not let him cross.

no, if you have committed a felony, you will need to obtain a pardon from your country. it would be the same for a canadian who committed a felony, who wants to travel to the states. A pardon can take up to 10 years before allowing passage.

You don't need to get a pardon necessarily. However you would need to convince Canadian immigration that you have been successfully rehabilitated, and that paperwork can take several years.

My husband has a juvenile criminal record (hes now over 40) and it was mis-filed at the county clerk's office, so he's inadmissable to Canada. We attempted the rehab paperwork but CIC kept losing things and then the FBI security check expired etc etc etc...we gave up, and will try again wen we have more patience.

Immigration WILL check for records if you are taken in to secondary inspection at a land crossing, or if you enter Canada from an airport. As soon as they enter your name and address, they'll see any record that you may have. They do this whether you're visiting a short time, or applying for a visa.
