You Don't Need a Passport to travel by land or Sea to Canada and return to the USA until January 1, 2008. A Driver's License and Birth Certificate are good until then. You can check this out at the Homeland Security Site as I did, get the correct answer with out guessing.

All air travel to Canada and back to the USA Requires a Passport as of January 1, 2007.

As of January 1st, Canada and Mexico both require a valid passport. Your drivers license will still be recognized, but in order to cross the border, you'll need your passport.

Yes, you can still drive into Canada or Mexico with your DL or Birth certificate. You'll have to have your passport starting next year in January.

You may be able to leave the country with just that documentation but you won't be able to get back in the states. They have changed the law and both borders require a passprt for re-entry.
