Most places that are used to seeing tourist traffic will accept US Dollars.
Watch out for punitive exchange rates, though, for cash.
Don't expect to receive change in US currency.
Your best bet is to use a credit card and let the card company take care of the exchange rate.

In my experiences, in very few shops. It's pretty much chance if a store decides to accept American money or not- they certainly don't have to.

Yes, a lot of shops accept it and also there are money exchange and banks you can change your USD easily.
You can also use your debit card to take money out of any ATM if you don't want to carry a lot of cash.
If you don't speak French, you may not want to ask in every store if they accept USD. Although, most of the people in Montreal speak both French and English pretty well.

Yes. Careful of the exchange rate though - it can vary shop to shop...

It's best to exchange the money before you come to Canada

Sometimes, yes, but you get a crappy exchange rate.
For example, at the movie theater Cinemas Guzzo, its 75 cents canadian for 1 dollar american.

Yes and No. It depends on the store or business. I would say, it is best to change your money to Canadian Dollars which is a stable currency and this would avoid all problems since all businesses will take local Canadian currency. As far as US dollars are concerned, I am sure most businesses especially in the tourist zone will accept them, providing our currency does not fluctuate greatly.
The only time US currency was not accepted was when the US dollar tumbled below the Canadian Dollar. Otherwise you should be OK.
