Can anyone tell me about Edmonton, Alberta?

I'm moving to Edmonton this summer for my job. I don't know anything about the city at all. Does anyone know the areas that are good to raise kids in? Anything else there I should know about?

Edmonton is festival city.
You should check out all the festivals.
I think the best ones for kids are:
K-Days (now called Capital EX)
http://www.capitalex.ca/
Folk Fest
http://www.edmontonfolkfest.org/
Fringe
http://www.fringetheatreadventures.ca/index.php/fta
Street Performers
http://www.edmontonstreetfest.com/2006/

Most areas are good for kids. The suburbs are very popular (Sherwood Park, St.Albert). I am biased against the North side (we call it the "hood" even though there is not really a "hood" in Edmonton). If you want to stay inside Edmonton city limits the west end is the best for raising kids (in my opinion). You should look at what is close to work and go from there (there are couple of blocks right downtown that I would not live but everything else in Edmonton and area is nice).

(By the way, the suburbs of Edmonton are different from US suburbs for the most part. They are not all "cookie cutter" houses hours away from the city.)

I grew up in Edmonton. It is freakin COLD there! Don't move to Millwoods unless you like crime. Move to somewhere in the Southwest part of the city. Oh yeah, it's really cold in Edmonton. And finally, you should be aware that the winters are unbelievably cold (too cold for people).

The beauty of Edmonton is that you decide what you want in a child-raising area. If you want to be in an area that is just young families, you can find lots of new developments that cater to new families. I live in an older area that has old, young, middle aged, and unlike the newer areas, we get mail delivered to our house. THe school system has open boundaries, which means that your kids may not go to school with other kids in the neighbourhood, but you have lots of flexibility in what you want your kids to learn. I've had kids in french, cadet program, english, etc. They've been in both the public and the catholic systems, although we're protestant. I'm from Calgary, and love Edmonton. It's like one humungous small town. If you haven't checked out the city site, do so. Lots of info.

Hey there! We just moved south of Calgary 2+ months ago. We really like it here! Not too sure about Edmonton though, just know it gets REALLY cold in the winter!! Oh, I hear they have an awesome mall there too. Super huge with an amusement park in it!

Good luck in Alberta............

It's a beautiful place where the beer flows like wine and where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano.

hookers go missing a fair bit so don't become a hooker, our hockey team is doing well so that is good. We have a gay mayor who has not come out yet with his gay friend on the board. other then that its great!
