Both sound wonderful!!

The North is changing rapidly so you might want to see the polar bears as soon as possible (before they are all gone).

The train trip also would be great and you would see a greater variety of animals and scenery. The train trip would also probably be more relaxing.

I would go for the train holiday for sure!

Canada is so unbelievably beautiful and you would see tons of amazing scenery as you chug along in your train.

You two can compromise and do both. Select a shorter train tour ( 5 rather than 7 days such as the Tour of the Rockies listed on the Train Tour website) then, book a two-night stay at Churchill to watch the polar bears afterward.

Go to the link listed below, click on "Tours" at the top of the home page and look at the self-guided tours at the bottom of the page on Tours. Have fun and preserve your marriage, kiddo!

Train tour - you will see more

the train

the train tour is awesome, i've never been but i know several folks who have and they loved it. don't know much about the polar bear tour but it sounds very cool and unique. personally i would go for the more rigorous polar bear tour, but if it's the two of you on a romantic jaunt, go for the train.

Do your own thinking!
Seven days of polar bearing would be boring. Churchill isn't going to be very exciting, and Winnipeg's not that great for tourists.

(No offence to Mantiobans on Yahoo! Answers...)

But Vancouver, Calgary, Banff, etc, are great cities; that'd be a fun trip. That's a gorgeous part of the country; no polar bears, but still plenty to look at.

So. I'm on your side.

That said -- if compromise is an option, take a train trip around Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto, and then go up north for just a few days to look at the bears...?

I agree with Tom T. The Rocky's are stunning and you will see a lot more wild life, including black bears. Its a good compromise.

I would have to say A. think that it will be more fun and u will get to see more (instead of 7 days looking at walking fur).

Look - if you are going to do a train tour - the rockys is the best and the cities of Calgary and Vancouver offer a lot to see. But the journey is amazing and you will see heaps.

But I do have another recommendation. There are a lot of tour companies that link up the rockies train tour with doing a 7 night Alaska cruise - that is magical. I highly recommend it if you have the time and money to link them together. Both you and your husband would love it.

Plus bears are okay - but really they get a bit boring to watch. Not to mention a nuisance. We get black bears that roam into our backyards in North Van - and I would rather they stayed asleep on the mountains that is for sure. They are not as spectacular as polar bears, but even still - I can't say they are all that stimulating to watch.

Boingy Tigger
Ahhhh..... the little polar bears all the way! How many opportunities have you had to see bears, compared to the times you've been on a train? Enjoy.

Depends what your looking for, the rail tour of BC would be my choice, because I have done it. You will see breathtaking scenery that you could not even imagine. I currently work in Northern Saskatchewan, it's cold, lots of snow and the little towns have very little to offer. The one we were at last has a population of 120 and the post office is only open twice a week, no news papers available, no liguor outlets and very restricted TV. The roads are absolutely horrendous. In my estimation you'd have to be a real nut case to WANT to be up there. Keep in mind too, that we are experiencing an unusually warm winter (so far) which might put a damper on your polar bear trip. Here's a thought, why don't you each go on the trip of your choice then meet back in Winnepeg. You'll have new stuff to talk about for YEARS!!!!

i Agree the train tour one seems to let you relax and just watch it all. but id also look at the http://www.mightyfinecompany.com/Canada+Grand+Rail+Circle-68-18.aspx one because its a few more days and not much more.

y2jasmine
The train tour could occur anytime, meanwhile polar bears are starting to become extinct. They are amazing creatures and so I would chose the polar bear tour holiday if I loved nature. Besides it seems more relaxed than the train tour - one day in Vancouver is just too little to see everything - I would make that another trip, but drive it instead.

happyday to you

Well if you actually want to see Canada then go on a train tour and if you want to see polar bears then go to a zoo.

Coming from England I think you will find BC and the Rockies amazing. I grew up in BC, actually went to high school in Kamloops. Even though I am living in Europe now and have traveled all over the world, I think Kamloops and BC in general is THE most beautiful place on earth. Going on a train you get the opportunity to see an interier part of BC that is really hard to see otherwise. Many locals never visit those strange little villiages in the isolated canons that you will get to see.

Watch for a little town called Lillooet that I think you may pass through and probably dump your garbage. I lived there for a couple of years in the 80's and people still road their horses into town and tied them up in front of the saloon.

I would do the Polar bear trip. Polar bears are going to be extinct soon they say and you really should see them in the wild. A zoo does not animal justice. That is like saying a balloon trip over the Seringetti in Africa is the same as seeing a zebra at the zoo. (no comparison) Yeah, the train ride will be long. But, the scenery changes so much as you go from plains, to trees to tundra. The tundra itself is amazing. Your tour didnt mention the belugas you can see at Churchill. Also, Winnipeg is the home of "Winnie the Pooh". If you are into ghosts, the Fort Garry Hotel has a haunted room, you should see if it is available. :) (a search on "Fort Gary Hotel ghost" will bring up the story) There is NOTHING like the northern lights over Hudson Bay at Churchill. (some people say it is lucky to conceive under the northen lights)

I am not taking away from the western train ride. It is also gorgeous. But, I am from northern Manitoba and it is different from the other things you can experience any time. I think I know your tour guide for the trip, and he is great. (if he isnt the guide, I am pretty sure he still has a share in the company)
