Go for it. It's not a problem.
You need a valid US passport now- it's not enough just to have a drivers license. Bring your registration just as you would if you were traveling anyplace at home, and your inspections should not be out of date.
One thing I do every year is contact my car insurance people (geico) and ask for a proof of insurance letter valid for Canada. I just carry it with me in case there is a problem . It shows any Canadian official that you have insurance, and will be covered in Canada. It is not an unusual request , just do it time before you travel.
Call your agent a couple of weeks before. This would need to be done each year it you travel there often.
It's common to see US plates if you travel in Canada.

yes you can. i use to live in michigan for 27 years up until 2 years ago. ive been to sault ste marie canada twice, windsor canada 3 times, toronto once, and a little town by sparrow lake attleast 3 times. each and every time we drove to the border, they ask what your intentions are, you say vacation. they ask how long? tell them week or 2. they ask if youd like to claim anything, tabaco alcohol fire arms blah blah, they ask for i.d. and tell you enjoy or pull over and they search your car as a randomly routine thing they do. but getting into canada has never been a problem for me. unless something changed in last 5 years

of course you can, don't worry about it. people do it all the time. the worry you are concerned about it for long term use. you can do what you like. Think about it, how would it be for everyone else.

You're entering another country,so you'd be best served to have your documents in order, just in case you happen across some over zealous border patrol officer.
Slammin the pedal to the metal and barging through customs only works in the movies.

As long as your registration and insurance are good, and you have a legal drivers license. Then you'll have no problem.
