Christ . . . im sorry but I've l've lost track of how many times I've seen this question on both the Canada and US forums. It's so simple to go to the Canadian Customs & Immigration website or the U.S.Customs and Homeland Security website. Just put either one of those into Google and they come up first. I see so many people say you do need a passport, which stops people from travelling because they think they do and don't have one. It's best to only trust official government operated websites for important information like this.
Look at these links for all your information (these links were the first results on Google ... just so you know)

http://cbp.gov/ (U.S. Customs)
http://www.customs.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/kbyg/ (U.S. customs - information for travellers crossing the border)

No, you don't need a passport yet, that starts in January 2007 (although Congress is working on a delay). You can use your driver's license for now, but it is sometimes easier and quicker with a passport. |

You can still cross the border with birth certificate and drivers license (or picture ID). In 2007 sometime, entrance into Canada from the US will require a passport. |

Im not a resident of Canada but flew there a few months ago and was told starting in October you would need a passport to travel there. Until then a birth cert. & photo ID works. |

Yes, you can still enter Canada and return to the US with ID and birth certificate. That is slated to change in 2007. I always travel with my passport anyway - it seems to be faster. |

I just went to Canada in July and you didn't need a passport, but I heard people saying that soon you would be required to have a passport. I would go ahead and get one...it makes it a lot easier anyway! |

If you are a US Citizen, you can enter in to Canada with a government issued official picture ID (such as a driver's license or state identification card) AND an authentic birth certificate with a raised seal, not just a copy. |
