Can i lease a car in Canada? |
I'll be travelling in Canada and USA for about 6 months total.
Would I be able to lease a car for this time to travel in both Canada and USA?
I am Australian, coming as a tourist but i don't know if i satisfy the requirements for leasing.
I understand I would also need to pay insurance and road tax on top of the lease cost, how much am I looking at for these and the lease costs? (minimum) Additional Details u said $6000 for 6 months?
Would I need to pay $6000 up front?
how much would I get back after?
plus insurance and tax?
how much does tax cost? |

You may need to look at two different rental packages - one for the US and one for Canada. You will not necessarily be able to take a rental car across the border unless you make those arrangements with the rental company, and it will make your rental more expensive if you are taking the car out of the country. We have been down that road.
Contact a car dealership in the city where you will arrive and see what they say about leasing a vehicle. I am not sure that you would qualify to lease a vehicle as you will not be a resident, but it could be possible. The problem with the lease is that you would need to find someone to take over the lease when you are finished with the car, or return it to the dealer and pay the penalty - I expect there would be a large penalty since you will be vacationing and doing a lot of driving so your mileage will most likely be over the allowed limit.
Another option is to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles of the province where you will arrive and see if you would be allowed to register a vehicle in Canada or in the US. (My husband and I purchased and registered a vehicle in the US as Canadian citizens when we were not residents of the US - we were travelling on our sailboat and were using a local address in the US, and we were totally upfront with the officials there.) It may be easier to purchase and register a vehicle in the US than in Canada as a citizen of another country, but you need to ask the questions of the right people. If you can register a vehicle in a state in the US or a province in Canada your best option might be to buy a vehicle when you get here - not a new one, but a "gently used" one. For the $6000 (and probably for considerably less - we have done it) you would pay for rental I know that you could get a vehicle that would be quite satisfactory for six months of use and you could get some of your money back when you sell it at the end of your vacation.
I hope these thoughts are of some help. Best of luck and have fun on your trip. |

Check with dealerships in the States and Canada and see what you need to do...check the area that you are arriving in first. I am sure you can find out through web sites. |

In Canada, you have to be min 25 years of age to rent a car(I'm not sure if that applies to leasing). Coming from Australia, I'm assuming that you would also need a valid international drivers license.
I looked at a couple different car rental places in Canada and for 6 months you're looking at min. cost of around $6000.
It is difficult to lease a car on short term, as many leases last for 24 months.
Here's a website that can help you try to find a short term car lease by lease assumtion.

I am unsure if you can bring a rented car from Canada into the States of vice versa. However, if you plan to travel by car, bring enough fuel, water, food, a tent, and at least one spare tire and a good map as distances between towns and cities (especially in Canada) are often long with very little in the way of services in between. Winter is by far the most dangerous time to travel as the roads can be icy and prone to avalanches. Many unprepared (and even experienced) people have died along North American highways due to weather conditions.
Fuel is much cheaper in the USA. Depending on what state/province you are leasing from, the rates will be different. |
