Can you help change my mind? Serious mature answers please? |
I recently had an opportunity to spend a lot of time in Canada, BC to be specific. I have travelled a lot in my life and lived in several different places in the world. I am NOT military. My time in Canada brought me to some conclusions that I hadn't expected:
-The Canadians I met seemed closed minded to other nationalities. I noticed this in the way my friends spoke of East Indians and Arabs especially.
-There are TV shows that my Canadian friends love. The goal of one show is to simply make fun of people. This guy would go around and interview people. He would say outrageous things that no one would believe and people would go for it. It was very disrespectful but my Kanuck friends loved it.
-I noticed that there are many nationalistic "ugly" Canadians with Canadian flags on their cars, in front of houses, etc. I don't like to use flags.
Maybe this means I need to change my friends. Can anyone convince me that Canadians are not this way. Thanks. Additional Details I should also mention that my favorite countries that I've lived in, visited or have relatives in are:
Italy, Greece, Turkey, India and Poland |

Well, I do not kow too much about other ethnicities and how open-minded they are......... but I do know that the human race is in itself, pretty closed-minded. I have found that truly open-minded people are hard to find. There is always some form of nuisance that weasels its way into the mind, and sometimes it seems that it is just easier to conform than it is to be true to who you are. In the end, everybody is allowed to have and to express their opinions - regardless of anything.
Most people just have not figured out how much easier it is to think OUTSIDE of the box, and I am not one to let the cat out of the bag just yet......... People can figure that out for themselves in time.......... |

It seems that YOUR Canadians are that way.
I've been to Canada several times, even to Montreal - where the French are - the reputation for them being rude. And I was amazed by their courtesy.
You may need new friends - it happens.
British Columbia I don't know - I've been to Toronto several times, Vancouver (the city not the island), and Montreal. |

Maybe they're a bit isolated. And for the t.v. show, it's just one show out of all of them. Like, here in the U.S., there are mean shows. I wouldnt worry too much. |

You're going to find people like that in every country. It's a sad thing, but it's true. Race- Bashing seems to be a popular sport everywhere.
Talk to your friends and tell them how you feel. Maybe they watch the show but don't really feel that way. |

Dude Canada is not the only place that people are like that...I think that americans are pretty bad themselves. I am not trying to disrespect anyone but hey they are and I know...my parents and siblings are like that and that is one of the reasons I really don't like them that much. I think that maybe you should make new friends if your current ones are making you uncomfortable in any way. You should stay their friend if you really like to hang with them though, just respect everyones opinions no matter how out-landish they are, because everyones got one... |

I think people are that way everywhere. If you like your friends for other reasons, besides their political views and certain prejudices, then be friends because they are nice to you. If they are not good to you--like if they put you down or say things to make you mad on purpose, then maybe you need to distance yourself from them. You can still talk to them and be an old friend, just not one that hangs with them all the time. So, you need to look at how they treat you before making your decision. To me that is more important than their childish, political views. |

There are good and bad in every country in the world. I have been to a few and I can honestly say that you probably just met a bunch of Canucks who let their worst sides show. Some Canadians have a smug kind of ego that shines through, especially when they are comparing themselves to Americans. If you want a great funny read with quite a bit of info on Canada and the Canadian mindset, read:

- "The Canadians I met seemed closed minded to other nationalities." Look in the mirror.
- Have you seen US TV?
- Flags are a sign of patriotism. I myself am not patriotic (nor American), but appreciate others that are. |

from BC Canada and we are all not like that. Sounds as if your friends are immature. I was born and raised here and have seen many new cultures and people from other countries arrive here, see I didn't say invade! We have grown so fast, that many us are overwhelmed by the changes and or even frightened by them. I have to agree that many had better open their minds because we are and will continue to be a global community |

This show you speak of I know what it is. It's called talkign to americans. A Canadian hosts goes down and asks americans what they think about a certain made up, rediculous canadian issue, and since Americans stereotypically "dont know anything about canada" you get funny asnwers.
This is fueled by some of the ignorance we get as Canadians. Ask any Canadian, they'll have some funny story to tell about some miss informed American asking them if they live in igloos or if they play hockey all day. |
