You can see Niagara Falls from the New York side, but the view is better on the Canadian side. There are also more attractions and hotels on the Canadian side of the falls.

Your obviously one of the many people who have become confused by the new passport requirements between the U.S. and Canada. Currently, you DO NOT need a passport to drive into Canada, or the U.S.

It's AIR TRAVEL that now requires a passport (as of January '07). The passport requirement for land travel between the U.S. and Canada does not come into affect until January of 2008. So you have 4 months to visit Canada without a passport.

From the U.S. State Department:

"As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea could be required to present a valid passport"
http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2006/76752.htm

So, as you can see, you currently don't need a passport for land travel. You do need a birth certificate and/or drivers license or some form of ID to cross the border, but a passport is NOT required.

Yes, you can see it from the NY side, but passport restrictions aren't currently in effect for US citizens at Niagara Falls. You can still cross.
