Oh, no, it is far too cold, your nose will fall off. Besides, in winter there are bear and wolves in the streets. Cars don't run in winter, the oil freezes solid. We pretty much stay inside with a huge fire burning. Our summer activity consists of cutting hundreds of tons of firewood.
LOLOL!!
What passes for an education in the school system these days?

Of course you can, with proper winter clothing. Hat, gloves, scarf, making sure all your extremeties are covered to prevent frost bite. There are many people in Winnipeg who do not own vehicles. There is also public transportation in the form of buses, and taxi cabs.

There is a reason that this Canadian city was nicknamed "Winterpeg" by many people who have lived there. It is probably one of the coldest Canadian cities outside of the Arctic Circle.

However, if you live anywhere in Canada other than southern BC, you learn to dress warmly in winter and to use layers.

In Winnipeg, it is not necessarily the cold weather that gets to you but rather what is called the "wind-chill factor" that makes it feel colder than it actually is.

Common sense prevails in winter here in Canada. If we are going out, we wear warm winter boots, gloves or mittens, a hat that covers our ears, and a warm lined jacket. If you are walking to work or taking public transit, these are a must, and I would also recommend thermal underwear or "long johns" on the coldest days.

Also, stay warm by using natural wind blocks like bus shelters, coniferous trees, or buildings. Even a high snowbank will help keep you out of the wind, but will also make you less visible to snowplows and cars, so ideally wear something bright or reflective, especially after the sun has gone down.

Depending on where you are from, you will find it more stressful than others. People from Montreal tell me that Winnipeg is cold, and we are used to cold weather. So if you are from Florida, Mexico, or another very warm place my guess would be that you will find it very harsh for at least the first winter here.

You'll be fine, lots of people don't have cars and make it through the winter. Just make sure you bundle up and have all the proper winter gear.

If you dress for the weather, you can walk outside in Winnipeg during the winter. If, however, you try to get away with wearing a light windbreaker, no gloves, no hat and only running shoes, then you will freeze to death.

Hoof Hearted
non-Manitobans do not survive walking during our winter... just kidding...

but seriously, yes, you can survive walking in Manitoban winter (with the proper clothing)... there are those really cold, biting winds some days but I think you can also take the bus on those really bad days... depending on where you are coming from, you might think it is just way too cold for you... but you will survive...

for your question on how long... again, it depends on what kind of day it is & how well you are in the coldness... & how much covering you have... some serious necessities are: toques, winter jacket, gloves and winter boots/shoes that are really warm (and for those really bad days: long johns and something to cover your face)...

i think you could survive without a car (I mean, it all depends on where you need to go but you can take the city bus)

Fun fact: Winnipeg is the coldest city in the world with a population of over 600,000 (http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/weather/winners/highlights-e.html). But really, you'll be fine, just be sure to bundle up.

Cannot The Kingdom Of Salvation
I can survive with a tee shirt and shorts.... for about 20 minutes.

i'm sorry to say but this is a really stupid question. i'll answer anyways.

If you where the proper clothes like a hat and mittens and a jacket and long sleeve shirt and long pants then yes you can servive. its like - 35 is the worsest

The city doesn't shut down because it's cold outside. You can get to just about anywhere in the city by using buses, With that said the buses are often late in winter due to driving conditions.

You need good winter clothes to make sure you don't suffer from frostbite. The few extreme days we have exposed skin can freeze in minutes- so it's important to dress up really well. On these kinds of days it's smart to stay inside rather than spend it all day outside.

Lots of people don't have cars and get by just fine. If you dress warmly you can stay outside all day- just not when it's -50 with wind chill. If you need a friend to give you a tour when you move here give me an email- matsuri_aka@yahoo.ca
