Canada Drinking age different for Americans?

I just turned 19 today, and me and a couple friends from the Fire Department are planning on going to Canada this up coming weekend to celebrate the best way you can celebrate a birthday!
However, I've heard from a few people that there was a law passed that makes the drinking age apply to the rules of a visitor's country. What I mean by that, is that if your from America, the drinking age is 21. To me, this is ridiculous, and the laws of a country should apply to foreigners as it does to locals, regardless of where they're from.
Can anyone either validate or disprove this rumor?
...Websites that show drinking ages for Americans in Canada would be much appreciated!
Thanks!!

"Hi'....firstly ....."Firemen Rule " *lol*......Now to your question , this rumour is absolutely untrue.....you can be from Mars for all we care in Canada and the following applies for everyone.......Visitor's, Canadians, Liliputians, Sagitarians, Vegetarians , Mathematicians , Americans , left handed people , whomever.......The RULES ARE THIS ........*S*

The legal drinking age in Canada ( for anyone ) is the "minimum age" at which a person is allowed to buy and drink alcohol in a premises, including bars, pubs and nightclubs and also including going to a liquor store or beer and wine store and purchasing alcohol for personal consumption off premises and I.D. is always checked.

The legal drinking age in the individual provinces( listed alphabetically ) and territories of Canada is ..........

Alberta - 18
British Columbia - 19
Manitoba - 18
New Brunswick - 19
Newfoundland and Labrador - 19
Northwest Territories - 19
Nova Scotia - 19
Nunavut - 19
Ontario - 19
Prince Edward Island - 19
Quebec - 18
Saskatchewan - 19
Yukon Territory - 19

Aside from that.....in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Underage drinking by 16-17 year olds under parental supervision is permitted. Underage drinking by minors, under parental supervision in a residence or a temporary residence, is permitted in Alberta.

Anyway I just read in your question where you also wanted a site, so here's one.......
http://canadaonline.about.com/od/canadianlaw/g/drinkingage.htm

So relax and have fun and a "Welcome" to Canada ! *S*

Glad to help ya ! *S* (Michael C...)

Not true. If you are of age in Canada you can legally drink. You follow the laws of where you are, not of your own nationality.

No, that is not true. There is a set age (it varies from province to province) but whether you are a local, a visitor, a foreigner or an alien, that's the age that the bartender or server will go by, not whatever it is at home.

Nope "regardless of your nationality" it is 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec and 19 in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.Make sure you have a photo ID "driver's license" with you :)

justice for all "remember that" :p

Canadians doesn't care what the drinking age is in the USA. Someone is having you on, and you fell for it. Do you really think that bar tenders ask for a passport then have a list of ALL the countries in the world and ALL the legal drinking ages and have the time or the interest in referring to it?

That would mean that if a 10 year old came in and ordered a beer and came from a country that had NO drinking age they would to serve him?

Sorry someone is having fun with you and you fell for it AND got all bent out of shape over it and posted your rant to prove it, LOL

MasterPython
Bars can refuse to serve anyone, for almost any reason save race, sex and religion. The common ways they do it are dress codes and asking for more pieces of ID than anyone normally carries. Making up a fake law sounds like something bouncers would do to keep out trouble makers.

If you are over 19 you can have a drink anywhere in Canada with valid ID regardless of where you are from.
Enjoy Canada and the ladies.

they just changed it to 25 for americans, 19 for everybody else, apparently it's based on maturity levels

I believe they are doing this, but it is not yet in effect. I know someone who is 20 and goes up to canada and drinks with an american I.D. Hope that helps.
