Actually....
Read Article 11 of the Articles of Confederation.
It is definitley possible.
There's just not any push or pull factors for making it happen. Canadians enjoy a virtually identicle standard of living to their American neighbours. So there's not push factors making us want to the join the United States. There's no pull factors from America either. Canada would add about 34 million people to the US.... roughly 10% more people. BUT, the majoirty of those people would vote Democrat.
If you review US annexations in history, they tried to really even it out politically. that's the old Mason-Dixon strategy. Half slave, half free.... not adays it would be half Liberal half Conservative.
Why add Canada and 10 more states and 3 territories to the union when you have a free trade agreement anyways? the US can get all they want from Canada without tariffs, so why extend the political arm? It would seem like a waste of time. In Canada, vice versa... we have full access to American markets to sell our goods and services... so why would there be a need to join the US for economic purposes?
I find this topic really interesting. I'm a history buff.... actually kind of suprised Canada isn't part of the USA.... some pretty good diplomats on this side of the border lol.
BUT, if you're more interested in this check out the following websites, it may peak your interest more, you could makea justifiable argument for it other than "Alaska looks funny not connected to the USA".
I am an English, Western Canadian. In my view of history and politics, I actually believe our natural place would be in an American union, I think had it not been for the War of 1812... we would be part of the USA... very similar in a sense to how Texas, Vermont, and and Western Florida joined the union.
BUT, I won't bore you... read up the sites I gave you, you may like them. |

How about the US become part of Canada? It may help your economy.
I would propose to you that the same answer you get from Americans to that question is the same one you would get from Canadians to your question. The only difference is, we would throw in an "eh" at the end of our answer.
No way eh. |

from the blood in the sand of Juno Beach, mud of Paschendale, and hills of Vimy to Queenston heights... that will never ever happen.
Canadians DO NOT wish to join the US...
if a poll were held on that question in canada you may get 4-5% yea at most |

No thanks, we are not interested. While Canada has plenty to offer in such a partnership, there is nothing of the states which is of any interest or benefit to Canada. A partnership is a two way street. Sorry. |

Canada is part of Confederation and would not break away. Many Canadians like to visit the US, but very few would want to become one of the.
Alaska: was the best deal of the century that Canada missed out on. They bought it from Russia and that's why it's American soil and not Canadian. |

Why would Canada want to be part of the USA? Canadian culture is different, Canadian government is different, event the weights and measures systems are different. Canada is metric, US is imperial. The legal system is different - Canada does not have the death penalty. All in all, there are just too many ways in which Canadians and US citizens differ. If you're really concerned about Alaska being isolated, ask Alaskans if they'd like to join Canada. But don't do it right now. Most of them are in Hawaii for the winter. =) |

Actually. I'm probably the only canadian that thinks this, but I wouldn't be miffed if we joined up. Obviously though, we would have to change the title to United States of Canada :). Or we'll take all the northern states and all the southern states will turn into jesusland. No Actually, the US has lower taxes, stronger military all things Canadians don't like, but i don't mind them. Tehre is a clause 11 in the constitution that allows canada to join up any time it wanted to so i guess we could and should. Not in an economic downturn, that would kill both countries. |

Canada can take your blue states.
You can have your red states or join them with Mexico. (If they want them)
Sell Alaska back to Russia.
With the way things are going, you may have to sell off your assets (land) before you become a 3rd world, nuclear wasteland. It doesn't help the property value of Canada having you as out neighbour in these desperate times.
Slipstreamer - you really think Canada has nothing America wants? Canada has a large amount of one natural resource that the US is in great need of and will only need more in the near future. We have a big slice of the global supply of this resource. It is called "fresh water". Oil was the big thing of the 20th century but water will be top dog this century. Canada also has one of the biggest natural gas and oil reserves in the world and we still haven't explored much of our northern territories. Sure our oil may be dirty to refine but would you rather have dirty oil or oil with the blood of innocent people on it? Have you been watching the news about Mexico lately? I wouldn't risk a dime of investment in that country that is in the process of imploding.
The 21st century is Canada's century. Get used to hearing that. |

Q&A
 |
No I don't think its possible to become a part of the USA because nobody in Canada would want that. I don't think we should become a part of the USA because Canada is its own proud nation and doesn't need the USA for anything. |

Sure, lets do that - we have a lot more natural resources here to maintain the American standard and when global warming wipes out every coastal city from LA to Seattle and Boston to Miami, we have lots of land mass that will be prime real estate - not to mention, even further from Mexico. That should be reason enough to do it. And don't worry - if you really need to have more ready access to Alaska, all that pesky snow that falls in the winter will end when the climate jumps a few degrees higher, and then you can just pave an 8 lane expressway right through BC and the Yukon. Talk about an economic stimulus project. |

The US doesn't want Canada and Canada doesn't want to be part of the US.
There is nothing that Canada has to offer the US that it does not already have. Even Canada's oil reserves are not that much of an incentive as Mexico has plenty as well and technology is moving away from fossil fuels.
It's fine as is. |
