Unlike the Canadian who seemed only interested in trashing the US, we citizens of the US generally have a high regard for our neighbors to the North. But Canada has its own special uniqueness and its own ideological/cultural values. I would never like to see that changed. They have always been great neighbors, as well as strong allies and I see no way that they, ... or us in the US for that matter, ... would ever want to merge.

Judging by the unpleasant comments on both sides, I am glad to say that it is not a good idea.

Canadians feel that they would not want to give up their standard of living in order to do that.

absolutely not

No I would not like to combine countries. Our countries were born under different circumstances. Despite the fact that Europe wants to lump us together we are two totally different
people. We share some things but what we value tends to be different. In the U.S. you believe strongly in your rights as
individuals. You feel that it is important that each person make their own destiny and that it is only this way can you succeed. In Canada we are prepared to sacrifice some of our individual rights for the betterment of society as a whole.
This is why universal heath care is so popular in Canada and so unpopular in the U.S. The U.S. has a very strong level of patriotism which on some levels can be very offensive to other countries when it seems to become arrogance. Canadians tend to be a lot more low key in their patriotism
and seem by comparison not to care about our country so much. I totally agree that on this website there is too much bashing of U.S. or Canada. Sorry that is not how to maintain
the world's longest undefended border. Like or not we have to share this continent and that means we have to get along with one another even if at times we disagree.

Canada needs the U.S. let's face it.

Heres what I think...Canada and the US both need to grow up and stop putting each other down...if you judge based on whether someone is American or Canadian...ur basically being discriminating....just like someone being African American or Asian...it's wrong. The Us has enemies cause they made it that way....and vice versa...Canada I am sure has enemies. Both sides need to grow up....and live together..as one. Meet halfway. This is coming from a Canadian/American who has lived on both sides of the border.

Not a hope in hell! That way we don't have to be held in any way responsible for anything that may be done out of a "lack of character"! The U.S. shouldn't have to worry about outside terrorist activity. Walking through your neighbourhoods is dangerous enough. Rebuttal to Owlchemy & girly....You think I'm only interested in trashing the U.S.? Wake up! We watch the news too up here. We don't mind calling a spade a spade! We don't have our elected officials lying their teeth out so they can overrun another country without just cause. Canadians enjoy not having Saudi Arabian nationals plowing planes with innocent people on board into our national landmarks. Canadians used to have a worldwide reputation for being peacekeepers. Now that's tainted! Any European countries applying for membership into the EEC will have approval delayed if not rejected if there are any U.S. bases within their territorial borders. It's not just us who think your society is vain & egotistical. It's becoming more of an accepted world opinion with each passing day. So don't just spout off & accuse us of being judgemental. It's everyone! You've been living high on the hog for too long & I suspect that your days as a superpower are numbered. Go ahead & deny it all you want, but even biblical prophecy says you'll have your butts handed to you in the not so far off future....or is the God your money says you trust a liar too?

No, but if you could turn back the clock about 200+ years or so wouldn't it make more sense if the border ran north/south rather than east/west? Think about it, 99% of our commerce flows in a north/south direction. Topographical boundries mostly run north/south. A fisherman or logger from British Columbia has much more in common with a fisherman or logger in Oregon than with a factory worker in Ontario. Similarly, that factory worker in Ontario has much more in common with the factory worker in Ohio than with that fisherman from BC. A wheat farmer in Saskatchewan has much more in common with the wheat farmer in North Dakota than with somebody from Nova Scotia. You can get on an airplane and fly north/south without changing time zones or at least only have to go through one. To fly from Vancouver to Halifax you go through 5!!!!

From a military perspective, particularly the navy, only one ocean coast for each country to protect.

Just a thought.

Lots of thumbs down to my comment. Take national pride and patriotism out of the equation and just think about it from a logical viewpoint. Obviously it would never happen now, but 200 years ago it would have made perfect sense.
