I was in Banff, doing some snowboarding in 1996. On the motorways/highways... when we daily went out to the resorts, the tour rep pointed out these bridges at regular intervals for moose and other wildlife to use...... and those bridges cost $2 million US each to construct.
That is pretty considerate of the Canadians. |

Canada, like the USA, is a land of diversity. Yes, as it is well known, it generally has cold winters and warm summers. It is predominantly English speaking, but has francophone pockets (most of Quebec, a third of New Brunswick, and parts of Ontario and Alberta). Large cities like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa have a large number of immigrants. A popular belief is that the health care is alot better in Canada. It's free, but wait times are ridiculous. Taxes on retail products are twice as high because there is both a federal tax and a provincial tax (except in Alberta, where there is only a federal tax). The cost of living in cities like Toronto and Vancouver is quite high, but lower than in New York, Chicago, or San Francisco. As it is well known, Canadian cities don't have the crime problems of US cities. I live in Toronto, and you can walk on the street at 3 am. Muggings are extremely rare, and shootings happen, but not so often. Post-secondary education is cheaper in Canada than in the US, and a higher percentage have degrees, but many do not end up doing anything with them. Canadians are smart and knowledgeable, but laid-back and not money driven. I am Canadian, and I agree that Canadians lack a little ambitious spirit, and are not the most dynamic people. They seek a simple life, where work is for security and to make ends meet. Education is usually more for general knowledge. Competition tends to be frowned upon, along with the desire to be rich. They have a tendency to think that money should be shared, and developed countries should focus on helping poorer countries. Canadians are generally not racist, but they do tend to discriminate against the US. Comments like "americans think we all live in igloos" are ignorant, but I believe this is simply built-up frustration, because they feel ignored by the US. So is Canada better? It's a matter of taste. I have met many great people from the US. The US is highly capitalistic, where the american dream is highly embraced, and materialism is often regarded simply as ambitious, and anyone can become rich, it's a matter of determination, whereas Canada tends to think "if you' want to be rich, you have the wrong attitude towards life, and if you are rich, you should be giving some of your money to the poor." So if you are competitive and you want to be rich, you may feel more at home in the US. If you are laid-back, and just want a happy, simple life, you will probably feel at home in Canada. |

- our capitol city (Ottawa) is the coldest in the world (but in the summer it gets very hot and humid)
- Ottawa has the worlds longest outdoor skating rink (the first 10 km of the Rideau Canal are groomed for skating in Jan and Feb)
- stop signs in Quebec say "arret" (even though they say "stop" in France!)
- Little Italy in Toronto is the largest Italian community outside of Italy
- for some reason Canadians eat a lot of Kraft Dinner (more than in all of the US) |

Here is a surprising fact...even though we are said to live in the "Great White North" in Canada, one of our major cities - Toronto - is further south than the landmass of all (or part of) 10 states in the USA! In fact, the southernmost part of Ontario (the province where Toronto is located) is on the same latitude as northern California! |
