That is because America gets all the press due to its large population, economic and military strength. I am American and my mom is Canadian. Canada is a beautiful country with great people and Canadians should be proud of their country. There are more similarities than differences between our two countries and there are probably no two countries in the world that are better neigbors. The only negative that Americans have of Canada is your more liberal government. |

no idea where you get this notion from -- most American travelers put the Maple Leaf flag onto their backpacks in Europe and other places. very few Stars and Stripes to be seen.
while Obama is making up for a lot, the bad taste of the last few years still lingers.
and no, 'they" are not the same; that's why I'm here and not 'there'. I looked at both countries very hard, before I settled 'here' in Canada. |

Why are you doubting? Why don't you do your own research? Here are some of the facts:
Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world.
We are rich in oil, electric, freshwater, diamonds, forestry and many etc.
We are a democratic and free country.
We have a high standard of living, are rich in programs for our citizens, and offer universal medicare to all our citizens.
We are strategically situated in North America in the center of everything.
We are always in the top ten of lists for quality of life and other things also.
We have an excellent reputation around the world and you don't hear about other flags being sewn on backpacks but our own!
Look I could go on and on but why don't you travel around, see how other countries are like and then you can appreciate and understand Canada better?
Everybody needs a little bit of Canada! |

I wouldn't say "everyone" seems to love America better. Your a proud Canadian, so I presume you love Canada better, and I would assume a proud American would love America more.
Canada and America are possibly the two greatest countries on earth, and together we're unstoppable. As much as we are similar in our currents of thought, we each have very unique cultures, both as countries, and even the seperate regions of our countries.
I certainly wouldn't say they are the same. Canada has undeniably had a lot of American influence, but in Canada we have more liberal values, whereas Americans tend to be more conservative. In America they talk a lot more about their pride, whereas in Canada we don't so much.
One more thing I'll say is that the "American dream" is really played up in movies, but frankly there aren't any more opportunities there than in any other western country. |

Ever notice how many Americans are on the Canadian Y/A, they just can't seem to get enough of us. Plus a lot of them just come in to give thumbs down to all answers that are pro-Canada. It's kinda pathetic.
Everyone seems to love America? Since when? Seems like America is one of the least liked countries in the world. Anyway, we'll see how many thumbs down the Yanks give me, lmao. |

â™ Proud to be Canadian â™

hell yeah Canada is one of the best countries!! we scored 3rd out of 179 on the Human Development Index (that is a really good thing)... the US is only 15th... no, they are definitely not the same... Canadians are a lot more prouder of their country (except maybe now, this is changing because the US may have a better President... yes, I have heard stories *from people who actually experienced this* of some Americans using Canadian flags because they were embarrassed of their country...) |

Of course, in fact could very well be the best. I received this email yesterday and thought it was pretty good.
To tease my US friends, to clarify to my foreign friends who can't tell a Canadian from an American, and to remind my Canadian friends why we're different!
CANADIAN....
So, What Do We Canadians Have To Be Proud Of ?
1. Smarties
2. Crispy Crunch, Coffee Crisp
3. The size of our footballs fields, one less down, and bigger balls
4. Baseball is Canadian - First game June 4, 1838 - Ingersoll , ON
5. Lacrosse is Canadian
6. Hockey is Canadian
7. Basketball is Canadian
8. Apple pie is Canadian

10. Tim Hortons (coffee and doughnuts) beats Dunkin' Donuts (and Krispy Kreme gave up)
11. In the war of 1812, started by America , Canadians pushed the Americans back
Past their White House'. Then we burned it...and most of Washington ..We got
Bored.. Because they ran away, so we came home and partied...Go figure.
12. Canada has the largest French population that never surrendered to Germany .
13. We have the largest English population that never ever
Surrendered or withdrew during any war to anyone, anywhere. EVER.
(Mind you, we wasted a lot of our young men as foreign canon fodder subjected to the military leadership idiocy of allies).
14. Our civil war was fought in a bar and it lasted a little over an hour.
15. The only person who was arrested in our civil war was an American mercenary,
Who slept in and missed the whole thing...but showed up just in time to get caught.
16. A Canadian invented Standard Time.
17. The Hudsons Bay Company once owned over 10% of the earth's

18. The average husky dog sled team can kill and devour a full grown
Human in under 3 minutes.
............... I'm not sure I needed to know that!
19. We still know what to do with all the parts of a buffalo.

22. We ALL have frozen our tongues to something metal and lived to tell about it.
23. A Canadian invented Superman.
24. We have coloured money. We have looney and tooney coins. We don't have dollar bills.
25. We know how to spell colour, licence, honour, cheque. We know how to pronounce Iraq and Iran.
26. Our beer advertisements kick *** {Incidentally...so does our beer}
BUT MOST IMPORTANT !
The handles on our beer cases are big enough to fit your hands with mitts on.

Pass this on if you are proud to be Canadian!!! |

People I know don't think America is better, in fact quite the reverse. Unlike some people who answered your question, people I know feel being so close to America to be a disadvantage rather than something to be jumping for joy about. Having only one rather pushy neighbour when we're so meek is not a good thing.
How is Australia too far away and cut off? It is close to New Zealand and other South Pacific nations as well as being close to Asia. Canada is only close to and virtually surrounded by the USA. Technically we're also close to France and Denmark, but Greenland and St. Pierre aren't very dominant culturally. |

Well you have nothing to worry about.Canada is in many ways one the best places on earth to live. Some reasons why:universal health care, clean air and water which if you have not been to the third world is something a lot of people do not have access to.Americans are quite similar in many ways to us but there are some key differences. There is a reason why Americans put Canadian flags on their backpacks when they travel. If you were to ask people from around the world who they prefer Americans or Canadians they will pick Canada nine times out of ten.vive les Canadian libre! |

Even if it was true, I don't see why we should care if "everyone" seems to like Americans better......
Canadians show their pride in their country in a much different way than an American would. Its in the little things we do everyday, to improve our country, take care of those in need and uphold the standard of living we hold dear.
Thats why the American dream, is the Canadian reality.
*This Canadian has lived in the states, came home to Canada, and can give an honest viewpoint. |

i like how the states has more variety and excellent healthcare, and in canada i think the education is a lot better and its just so much cleaner.
both are pretty cool places to live, it all depends on where though.
i have lived in both countries and i really see no difference in many of the aspects, except for some small ideas such as in the states its important to assimilate while in canada multiculturalism is valued, and the whole socialization and healthcare, other than that the culture is similar, we all watch the same shows, eat the same food, and everything, the only other difference i will note is the difference in hockey popularity.
although the only thing i find is that there are canadians that resent americans, while in most parts of the us, people think its nice to come from canada |

Well Slipstream's answer is appalling. Not only does it prove the absolute unmitigated gall of whomever writes American history textbooks, it further supports the fact that America thinks she's the centre of the universe. The fact remains that America lost the war of 1812, and Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in Canada--why can't you guys see things for what they are?
...and LOL Riki--too funny yet true--the US would still be sending smoke signals in the dark if we didn't tell them about the telephone and sold them hydro to light their cities. |

I like Canada, it's a great country. The two countries are very similar, the US has a very strong cultural pull though. Canadians can be very defensive about America.
Most American travelers do not put the Maple Leaf flag onto their backpacks in Europe and other places. That would be an urban myth. Does anyone know an actual person who has done this? Not a "friend of a friend"? I have traveled all over as an American without any problems; so have my family and friends. No one really puts flags of any sort on their luggage - why would they?
The difference is the smug self righteousness that some Canadians revel in. As you can tell from some of the comments, many Canadians stereotype Americans as being very right wing, etc.... Of course the 300+ million of us all think exactly the same. Yeah, right. Canada and the US have very similar histories, right down to the slavery and oppression of minorities. Americans aren't in denial about it though.
Many Americans have travelled and/or lived in both countries and so can give an honest viewpoint, thus they are in the Canada section answering questions for other American tourists. It is the travel section after all. A lot of Americans have Canadian friends and family too.
Edit - sigh.."In the war of 1812, started by America , Canadians pushed the Americans back" - the war was declared on England as they were kidnapping(impressment) American citizens and England was trying to curtail international trade to France by interfering with US shipping to France (England was at war with France) = so it was English Imperialism towards a young country. Very little to do with Canada, the war was declared between the US and England/British Empire, and Canada was part of that empire. |
