Canada or United States? |
I have a simple question: is it better to live in Canada or the United States? Which one's more affordable, safer, has more opertunitys, and overall just has a better quality of life? If you have any information on why Canada would be better, I would love to know. Thanks in advance! |

Hi! I have lived in the US (3 years) and now in Canada (7 years). Which country is better for you? Depends on your preferences and where you're moving from. In my personal opinion, both of these countries are very similar, if not the same. Canada, although by not much, consistently outperforms US in the UN's Human Development Reports (Standard of Living). For 2007/2008, Canada is #4 (after Iceland, Norway, Australia) and US is #12. Canada generally has a colder climate than US (hence I want to move back to US sometime), but it would depend on what part of the country you live in. US has warm places, like Arizona, and Texas, and Canada mostly lacks warm places. But places like Victoria do not have much snow. It does rain a lot there. Elsewhere, Canada is a cold country. We have the North Pole :). In terms of economy, US has a much larger economy than Canada, and US generally has a tiny bit better unemployment rates than Canada, and you can generally make more $$ in US by doing the same job. Does that translate to more opportunities for you? Affordability depends on the location that you choose to live in and Canada and US are around the same if you pick moderately expensive places. Education the same. Healthcare, Canada is not too bad, but with the extra dough you make in US, you can get good Health Insurance. Canada is a much more peaceful and much less violent country than US for whatever reason. Canadians like to put Americans down in their talks, and Americans like to make fun of Canadians. Canadian government is usually more liberal than US government. For example, if you're gay, you want to live in Canada. But I have found there's very little difference in how Canadians and Americans think. And hey open border helps. So, once you settle in one country, it's very easy to go to another if you don't like where you are. Hope this helps. |

I find what rav_barb has posted above to be more or less accurate. However, based on my experience, the difference is really in Healthcare and Social support.
If you are young, and have no healh issues, then US. But, if you are looking to settle down in a place long term and dont love to move, then Canada is the place to live.
Social support (Like unemployment benefits etc) is much better in Canada than in the US.
However, the US is much better in terms of being able to accept all kinds of peple and having a common "american" culture. In Canada, you find everybody is more or less maintaining their own culture, so you have all different flags flying from cars. In US, you find only the US flag being flown. |

I live in Canada and I love it. Proud and free :). I think the health care system is way cheaper then the American health system and the crime rates aren't as high. |

For $$$ and career opportunities head to the US.
For lifestyle and affordability you want Canada. |

Each has it's good points and bad. Canada is safer, and the health care is more affordable. However, there is nothing compared to the go-get'em attitude in the US> Land on the shores with nothing in your pockets, and do well. (Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger) |

I depends on what is important to you. A lot of things are the same so it comes down to personality.
If you are gun-toting, overly religious, homophobic, geographically-challenged, fearful, and celebrity-obsessed then you would be much happier in the US.
If you like to travel to other countries (for their culture not their takeover), are accepting, practical, self-reliant, believe in some social programs, and have a good sense of humour then Canada's the place for you.
Canada has less crime and generally has a better quality of life, the US probably has more opportunities. The cities and some areas of Canada are expensive. Retail industry-type jobs are not great paying, but good money is made in resource-based jobs. I don't know how this compares to the US. |

In Canada you have more support from the government, and cheaper health care |

Well, i live in canada, but i travel to the states A LOT! And i'd prefer the states. I find it has more oppertunities, better quality of life, more options, more people, so many different kinds of people! But honestly, Canada is definitly safer, more accepting, and probably more affordable, it's hard to choose one over the other because they both have good and bad qualities but in my opinion i would rather live in the states. |
