The origin of the name "Canada" comes from the expedition of explorer Jacques Cartier up the St. Lawrence River in 1535. The Iroquois pointing out the route to the village of Stadacona, the future site of Quebec City, used the word "kanata," the Huron-Iroquois word for village. Jacques Cartier used the word Canada to refer to both the settlement of Stadacona and the land surrounding it subject to Chief Donnacona.By 1547, maps were showing the name Canada applied to everything north of the St. Lawrence River. The St. Lawrence River was called the "rivière du Canada" by Cartier, and the name stuck until the 1600s.In the 1600s, the name Canada was often used loosely to refer to New France, and as land opened up to the west and south in the 1700s, the name Canada was applied to what is now the American midwest and as far south as present day Louisiana. But it was not official. In 1791, the Constitutional Act or Canada Act divided the Province of Quebec into two - the colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. In 1841, the two colonies were united again, this time as the Province of Canada. At Confederation in 1867, the British North America Act officially joined the Province of Canada (Quebec and Ontario) with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to become "one Dominion under the name of Canada."Canada is the sovereign nation that occupies the northern region of North America. In 1867 Canada became an independent nation from the United Kingdom, but remains to this day part of the British Commonwealth. Canada is the second largest country in the world (second to Russia) and is home to roughly 33 million people. It is bordered by three oceans—Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic—and the United States of America (in the south and northwest (Alaska)). Canada holds ten provinces—British Columbia (BC), Alberta (AB), Saskatchewan (SK), Manitoba (MB), Ontario (ON), Quebec (QC), Newfoundland and Labrador (NF), Nova Scotia (NS), New Brunswick (NB) and Prince Edward Island (PE)—and three territories—Yukon (YT), Northwest Territories (NT) and Nunavut (NU).

Canada is a parliamentary democracy and holds the British monarchy (currently Queen Elizabeth II) as the head-of-state. Prior to European explorers, what is known as Canada, was and continues to be home to a general people now known as First Nations or Aboriginal people. Beside First Nations people, Canada has become home to immigrants from every nation across the world and Canadians pride Canada on being a multicultural nation. The first Europeans to permanently settle in Canada were English and French and because of this Canada has two official languages: English and French.Canada is home to ten provinces and three territories. Throughout the nation there is diversity in everything.

I am not Canadian, but I would like to throw in my views.
I have only been to Canada a couple of times, but have loved it each time. I do like to travel, but Canada has an ease about it that makes it heartwarming. As an American, I am impressed how Canadians like pop culture, but unlike Americans, Canadians are a very sincere people. They are not fake, divisive, or offensive as my fellow Americans often are. I just got back from school aboard, I am not going to lie, Canadians made fun of me for being American, but they are able to take a good ribbing as well.
I would love for my next visit to Canada to be in the western part maybe around Vancouver. I keep hearing how beautiful that part of your country is.

That is a lengthy topic

I went out campaigning for our riding lately - the concern of the residents was pretty much the same Who would take care of everybody as best as possible given our resources .

They disagreed on who could do that and how - but the genuine concern was for the society at large and the welfare of the weak -

That impressed me

Although I am not sure that "my" candidate will win - I am sure I like the response and reasons I got from this riding and others

We have avoided conflict when possible we have not glorified a rich military history that we do have -

We have been known as honest brokers and that to is important

There are volumes that could be written and have been written on this topic

They are by no way complete

So I will finish here

- the fact that her citizens love Canada so much :)

answer to 4 & 5:
been to all provinces but not yet territories but to pick favorite places; Queen Charlotte Islands of BC coast, Kentville, Nova Scotia when the tide is out and sand exposed along the rivers, Abraham Lake as you drive west from Red Deer into the Rockies...( jaw dropping), a Haliburton lake in July surrounded by water , rocks and pines in Ontario, the outdoor cafes along St Catherines in Montreal, Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, Banff, a Saskatchewan winter sunset, the green farmlands surrounding Brandon, Manitoba, St John waterfront, Kensington Market in Toronto, Mount Robson from Hwy#5 in BC heading north,
I could go on....

Shreddies, Nanaimo Bars, McIntosh Toffee,
Molson's Beer, Smarties, and Tim Horton's Coffee,

It's taken me 63 years to learn what I know. There is no way I have 63 years to tell you everything.

If you travel a lot, it soon becomes apparent that this is one of the most tolerant and diplomatic and truly respected counties in the world. That doesn't mean we don't have our share of racists or bullies or ignoramuses - we do. Perhaps we have less or maybe they are just better behaved or something but that is how we are viewed elsewhere. That is pretty unique I think.

My Favorite Canadian things - To Eat:
spruce beer and poutine when I am in Quebec.
Lobster when I am in N.S. Beef when I am in Alberta. Salmon when I am in B.C.

To hear: French when spoken well. The Newfoundland accent and all it's very colourful localisms. Celine Dion, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen

To see: everything from Newfoundland right through to Vancouver Island See my answer here

What pops into my head first - Montreal Canadians and Hockey Night in Canada.

Until i went to Manitoba, Canada was just a big country with forest, lakes, farms and mountains. When i saw the Northern light in Manitoba, i stood there for hours looking at them. It is one of the most beautiful thing i have ever saw in my life. Even more impressive then a twister.

Places to see in Canada :
The Rockies, this small town called Wawa in Ontario, The stampede of Calgary, Vancouver for the ocean, Madelin Islands in Quebec, the hot springs in Radium BC and so so so much more...
