Old Lady and Da Ben Dan are on crack. Bringing firearms across the border is easy. You will need to register it at customs the permit costs around $50.00 and is good for 60 days. You can save some time and hastle at the boarder by filling out the paperwork in advance. You can download a copy at www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca

I guess Sir Hector is assuming your car can get airborne and land directly in Alaska :)

As you can guess, they're pretty strict about it, but as long as it's not on the restricted weapons list, you should have no problem.

I dunno...don't ever see many guns in Canada..I know it's illegal to bring them in so you'd better find the right permits.

The important thing is to declare it and do the paper work.

The form is at the RCMP - Canada Firearms Centre, see my link. Non-Resident Firearm Declaration

Visitors may only import non-restricted firearms for legitimate purposes such as:

* sporting or hunting use during hunting season;
* use in competitions;
* in-transit movement (i.e., moving in the most direct route possible from Point A to Point B) through Canada; or
* personal protection against wildlife in remote areas of Canada, as long as the customs officer is satisfied that the circumstances warrant the firearm being imported.

Traveling with firearms is very difficult in Canada. Check with the Canadian consulate to find out what you would have to do in order to have a rifle in Alaska. You may have to ship it and pick it up when you get to Alaska, or they may seal it at the border, but check first so you don't run into any surprises when you get there.

Why do you need protection? Are you wilderness camping? If so, following common sense in storing your food and disposing of waste and the wildlife won't bother you. Again common sense around animals, ie don't get between mama and her cubs. If you see a small bear, where is the big one? A: behind you. Turn around slowly till you can see her then move slowly at right angles to get away. My daughter suggests if attacked dropping to the ground and rolling into a foetal ball. Bears are crappy soccer/football players.

Finally, if the guns are for protection against humans, we know that Americans have to be armed or they are not men, so we shoot first.
