Canadian Values?

My fiance and I, after we're married, are moving to Canada (we live in Minnesota now).

We know all the benefits, Socialized medicine, the whole wonderful green movement you've got going on, but, what we dont know, and what we need to know, before we undertake the long and arduous journey of emmigration, is what values do canadians hold?
About things like abortion? the death penalty? gay rights?

And also, really, how is the medical treatment youre recieving?

Our motivator for moving is to find a better, safe, cleaner place to live in order to raise a family, and ive always had a deep respect for the ways Canada runs their country.
Additional Details
I'm not looking for a reason not to go, i just want to understand my new (and better) homeland before i make the move.

Abortion is legal but it is more accepted in some areas then others. Quebec and British-Columbia are more pro-choice while the prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) are more pro-life. How the abortion process works is different in every province.

There is no death penalty in Canada and it is not likely that there will be one anytime soon. That doesn't mean that everyone is against the death penalty though.

Canada has a lot of gay rights but gays still to not have all the same rights as heterosexual couples. And there is still discrimination. As for same-sex marriages, most provinces and territories recognise them but not all.

Medical treatment is a big issue right now in Canada. Just about everyone complains about wait times and the lack of doctors. But we are not yet commited to privitizing health care. Canada is proud and loves it's universal system. While the canadian health system has many problems we do have get very good medical care.

The other big difference between the US and Canada is gun control. Our gun control laws are more strict but that doesn't mean no one owns guns or we don't have firearm related crimes.

Someone mentioned staying out of cities if you wanted a safe enviornment which is, partly, false. Canadian cities, like all large cities, have crime problems but most are pretty safe. And all have good, safe neighboorhods. I can't speak for all the provinces because I don't know them as well, but there is no place in Quebec I would feel unsafe.

Generally, Canada is very similar to the US. We watch the same movies and tv shows, listen to the same music, eat the same food... Besides a few difference, our values are very similar to those in the US.

Oh, one more difference, we use the metric system.

What are Canadian values?

Generally we respect others. We believe in the credo live & let live.

Yes, we have legally given gay people the right to marry. We believe everyone should be entitled to the right to persue happiness. Remember this is a governmental recognition, no church or religious body is forced to perform marriage ceremonies against their personal believes.

We believe all people should be treated equally under the law.

There is no longer a death penalty in Canada. There have been to many instances where innocent people have been charged with crimes and later we have found out that they were innocent.

Legally, a woman has the right to choose for herself whether she should/can have an abortion. This is somthing a woman has to come to terms with for herself. This is not the states concern....nor her neighbours.

As far as medical care.....yes there are long wait periods for services. This unfortunately is something that we can not seem to get around.......but at least we know that if we require a certain health service, we can get it without bankrupting our family in the process.

I hope you and your fiance are very happy together & good luck on your decision to emmigrate to Canada. Much happiness to both of you!

It doesn't matter what Country you live in.Home is where you are happy and comfortable at. Thank God we live in a wonderful like Canada or United States of America.
If you don't think so, go to a place where you to have hide and run for cover, when you hear a mortar or gun fire. Stop knocking the Canadians and thank God they are your neighbour.

if you already love it so, why are you asking for reasons not to go there? I live in the US and we are able to afford very decent medical insurance. I have nothing against Canada, but I prefer the US.

Fixguy
Canada isn't all that.
Healthcare has waiting lists a mile long and all the gifted doctors move to the U.S. to make more money.
The green movement? We get our cars made by the same companies. We have big industry. We signed onto Kyoto, which if followed to the letter would bankrupt the country.
Abortion is legal in Canada, which is a shame considering almost right up until birth it can be done.
Gay people have the right to get married in Canada and for some strange reason we value it as much as a normal marriage. If you want a safer environment stay out of the big cities and look up the crime stats of the area you’re moving to.
You'll need a private insurer for extra medical expenses. Some employers offer it.
Canada presently has a minority conservative government that seems to be governing from the center although the liberals seem to have governed forever.
I hope you like my country but you may find it not all that different from where you are now. It’s all smoke and mirrors unless thats what you value I guess.
Maybe you could help change that?
