Some do and some don't. It's easier and frankly kinder to exchange your money ahead of time.

Most stores in Canada do not accept American money, any more than US stores will accept Canadian money. It is not the legal currency of the country. Some smaller stores may do it as a service to their customers, but they are taking a chance on the exchange rates - and the customers likely won't get the full exchange rates either.

Some do, some don't. Ones very close to the border, ones who deal a lot with tourists are most likely to. But they don't have to since US money isn't legal currency in Canada, and you aren't going to get a very good exchange rate at stores which do take it.

Gypsy
Get your money exchanged or use a credit card or atm card. I always have to do that when in another country, why should you not when you are in mine? It saves a lot of time.

I'm pretty sure they accept American pennies, but other than that, I'm not sure.

no

some might if they're in area's with high levels of american tourism.

if you cant figure out whether or not a store would accept american money, think to yourself the american equivilent.... if this was america, would they accept canadian money? (they wont unless they're in an area with lost of canadian tourism, like the american side at Niagra)

remember american money is not legal tender in Canada so stores don't have to accept it.

also, if you plan on using American money, the exchange rate the store gives you is THEIR rate, and nothing changable-- it's often worse than the official exchange rate
