Canadian citizenship?

Is it true that if you were not in Canada for your 24th birthday between 1947-1977 then you are no longer a Canadian citizen or this just some crazy rumor?

Apparently it's true. Here's a link to the CBC website and their story. 10,000 - 20,000 people may be affected by this little rule.

It is not about being in the country, its about declaring one's citizenship before they are 24.

Yes, it's true. There was some nutsy law passed earlier in the 20th century that apparently didn't get taken off the books til the late 70's. My personal guess is that it had something to do with people defecting during WWII, but don't quote me on that.

Any which way, here's the link the CIC's site with some official information: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/facts/expiry-date.html

Yep.
It's true.
If you turned your back on Canada, why shouldn't Canada turn it's back on you?
Remember, it's not what your country can do for you, it's what you can do for your country.
And if someone couldn't be bothered to stick around, then they don't deserve to be citizens of one of the greatest nations on earth.

yes! Can you believe it?
It sounds crazy.

Wow !! That sounds rather crazy. It is rather strange to us, but they must have had a reason to make that law in the first place....

I'm guessing that it is some wifes tale but if you want to get the answer for sure why not call the citizenship office if you need to put your mind to rest on this subject. Being a Canadian I have never heard of this and it sounds pretty fishy to me anyway. Investigate it though to be sure.

Sounds like complete nonsense to me.
Now where was I on my 24th B'Day?
