Canadian father, american mother, would like to have baby in canada, will it be covered with my OHIP?

I impregnated a woman in US and would like to have her have a baby in Ontario CA. Will I end up paying all the bills for her pregnancy cost here in canada and not covered by my OHIP?, also what will the childs citizen be? We're not married.

Because the mother is not covered by OHIP she will have to pay the medical expenses. If you are going to pay them for her then that's great. If there is any medical issue with the baby after it is born, because it will be a Canadian baby, any costs incurred by the infant will be covered by OHIP. Just not the mothers expenses.

The baby can for sure claim Canadian citizenship, but won't have automatic American citizenship. You can apply for dual citizenship though.

she will not be covered on your ohip, she must be a permanent resident have her own ohip coverage

I am assuming by "Ontario CA" you mean Ontario, Canada and not Ontario California. ;)

If the child is born in Ontario, any costs incurred by the mother of the child for prenatal care will NOT be covered. That means doctor's visits and delivery. There have been some cases in the news in Ontario lately and the costs ranged about $10,000 to $20,000. If there are any complications, such as a C section, you are looking at a higher rate. (not only for drugs, but costs for room per days etc)

According to the OHIP website:
# My baby was born in an Ontario hospital but we are only visiting Ontario for a short period. Can we use the Ontario Health Coverage Infant Registration form to register our baby for Ontario health coverage while we are here?

No. Tourists, transients or visitors are not eligible for OHIP coverage. For a child born in Ontario to be eligible for Ontario health coverage they must make their permanent and principal home in Ontario, and be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period to retain OHIP coverage.

If you are visiting Ontario from another province or territory in Canada, contact your home province/territory regarding health coverage for your baby and any insured services received while visiting Ontario.

So...if the baby plans to live here, then yes he/she will be covered by OHIP. If the plan is to have the baby then go back to the USA.....well....you may get it paid for but officially that is fraud.

If she is American and the child is born in Canada the child could claim dual citizenship. American through the mother and Canadian
through birthplace. Unless your friend has taken up residency in
Canada and has applied for and received medical insurance under OHIP she can't claim free medical. You would have to claim her
on your medical as your wife either wedded or common law and she would have to have some legal status in Canada ie landed immigrant etc to qualify for benefits.

I think u'll have to pay since the mother is not a resident, even urself if u've lived out of province u have to be back at least 6 months to qualify as a resident..but check with ur Provincial Min of Health

HAPA CHIC
she has to be a permanent resident in Canada.
their is this idea that you can just cross the border and you get free health care .This is not true !!!
permanent residence means you pay taxes .It is the taxes( as we are laughed at by many americans that we have higher taxes) that pay for our subsidized health care!

No, her costs are not covered as the mother of the child is not a Canadian citizen and does not have OHIP.

But, if this woman intends on moving to Canada, then she can apply for a reimbursement withing a certain time frame of the birth which OHIP will give her. Please contact OHIP to find out what the time frame is and what is required. www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/prog...

If the mother plans on staying in the U.S., you guys will just have to fork out the costs.

Congrats by the way! :)

The childs citizenship may be split, but since you two aren't married, I could be wrong.
I think you can choose whether she pays or you.

John T
Baby will be Canadian. If you are resident in Ontario and pay for provincial health care, then yes, as long as you have been resident (living there for more than two months). If not, then the bills will not be covered. Apply now if there is still time.
